air conditioner blowing hot air

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

air conditioner blowing hot air

Post by TheTransporter64 » Mon Jun 09, 2008 7:40 pm

so I had to take off my radiator and condenser to fix some stuff with my car and I had to discharge my system. I had one of those DIY self charging kits that you can get from Wal-Mart and put it in. But of course it just blows hot air... do i need to get it purged or have the gas evacuated by a garage? Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated as its about 98 degrees outside.

Yes, since the system was opened you need to have a vacuum pulled on the system. And while your at it, you might as well have the shop charge it.

The other problem with the 13 oz recharge cans, or any size sold at retail is that they all have oil for lubing the compressor in them. The 13 oz example has only 11 oz of r-134a and 2oz of oil. if you need 3 or 4 cans to charge the system you'll have too much oil. The oil doesn't usually leak out too much, just the freon, so in most cases the factory fill is still there. The best thing is to get it proffesionally done.

^^^Didn't think about that. Good call though.

I used to evacuate and recharge air conditioning systems when I worked at Jiffy Lube and we had the proper equipment to pull all the old stuff out, oil, refridgerant, etc. It is just best to use the right equipment.

my AC was working fine, but the last couple of days its not been blowing very cold. i have recharged a couple of AC systems before and its just a matter of hooking up the refrigirant can to the low pressure line.... but where the heck is it on the neon???? i only see one port on a line and i believe thats the high pressure. do some neons not have a low pressure port?

I could look at mine tomorrow, but it prolly won't do you much good. Mine is an '01, and IIRC they changed the piping in '02 or '03? If you know which is the cold side then just trace the tubing to see if there is a charge port.

This is what the '04 service manual says:

DESCRIPTION
The A/C service port valve cores are serviceable
items. On 2.0L LHD models, the low side valve is
located on the liquid line between the A/C condenser
and the evaporator
and, the high side valve is located
on the discharge line fitting at the A/C condenser.

The pic shows it as part of the connector for the receiver/drier.

Hope that helps!

I would guess you need a refill, but the a/c performance does drop as the outside temps rise. The FSM tells what temp the a/c blows at certain outside temps. I remember it said at 100+ degree temps, the a/c blows at 65-70 degrees. I doubt it's that hot up there, but it may account for some drop in performance since it's summertime.
