Wrong belts for UR UDP.
Got my Unorthodox UDP on today and the 4040305 listed on the MP web site(well, actually they use a Dayco number that's 5040305 but it's the same length belt) is totally too short. Looks like a 4040315 or 4040325 would fit better. I wonder if the 4040500 for the air/PS will be long enough? Anyone else have any problems with belts and the UR UDP? Thanks.
P.S.
Called MP(big mistake) guy was a dick about it, seemed to act like no one else had any problems with their recomendations. Even the UR instal sheet lists larger belts then on the MP web site.

Well a 325k4(aka a 4040325) fit the alt. all though I had to crank it out as far as it could go to snug it up. The 515k4 was still too long so I ordered a 505k4 which should be better. Old pulley came off ok, new one went on without a hitch but the belts are driving me crazy,LOL.

A 320 will work on the alt. but no way in hell I could get the 500 to work on the A/C, PS. The 515 was too large but a 505 should work though.gilly02le wrote:Alternator - 5040320(32" 4 -rib)

Um, yah, but this one takes a 1/2" belt tensioner wrench, not the 17mm that the book called for. it's right behind the power steering pump mounted to the engine. The A/C and Power Steering are mounted to hard points, no adjustment for them at all. Alt. can be adjusted.gilly02le wrote:You do know there is a tensioner for the acc belts right? you can use a 17mm wrench to pull it toward the front of the car, if you have the belts run properly, a 50" belt is the Perfect size... This is what everyone else is running with thier udp.

Everything is metric on this car, and i just checked, it's definitely a 17mm wrench.. a 1/2 is too small, (1/2" = 13.2mm)
ironically enough, i just checked my acc belt, and it looks like im running a 49" instead of a 50"... i remember doing this because my ac/ps at low speeds would make my belt slip, with the tighter belt(490k4) i have No Problems.

On the belt tensioner on MY car(might have been changed for aftermarket, don't really know.) there's no place to put a 17mm wrench but there is a square hole that'll take a 1/2" square(like a 1/2" socket wrench) that you'll find on the belt tensioner wrenches used to remover belts. It looks a lot like this one:

Not a 1/2(13mm) socket, a 1/2 drive socket wrench which is the same size as the belt tensioner wrench. It's a square hole that 1/2".gilly02le wrote:Everything is metric on this car, and i just checked, it's definitely a 17mm wrench.. a 1/2 is too small, (1/2" = 13.2mm)
I'm going to try and get a Gates 490k4 to replace the stretched out 500k4 Gatorback that's on it now. It only slips when I have the air and rear window defogger on, other then that it works fine but I still don't want a belt that will slip at all.

It equals 13.2, if you measure an out of spec wrench.racer12306 wrote:FYI

No Idea, you'll probably just have to play "belt tag" like I did until you track down the proper size then write it down somewhere so you will know what to get at a later date.2k2rt wrote:so what's the proper sized belts on a 1gn? I ordered a Gates 490k4 from NAPA for it, the guy said the specs say the belt is actually 49.5" long, that's probably why they fit where a Gatorback 490 which is actually 49" long didn't fit. Can't wait to get a "proper" belt on my car so it'll not slip with the A/C and rear window defogger on. I'm also going to double check the Alt. belt tension while I"m under the car just to make sure it's not stretched any.

meh, the chart i have says 1/2" = 13.2mm.. i didn't write it, sue me, lol.
the belt i used from napa was a k040490.
Alt. napa 040315
P/s if your belts slipping when you put the a/c or rear defrost on, it's likely your alt. belt. I know because mine was doing the same, and i figured it was the ac compressor slipping a bit, so i got a new belt, and only fixed some of the squeak. A new alt belt fixed my problems entirely.

The one that would be different would be the alternator belt. Since it is a "V" belt on 1gn's. The PS belt like mentioned in another thread can be obtained by having a helper set the tensioner in the proper place, and running a string around the pulleys to get the length. They forgot about the tensioner in the other thread tho.

The 49"(suppose to actually measure 49.5") belt from NAPA didn't fit either. In fact is looked a bit smaller then the 49" Gatorback that didn't fit. Guess I'll just have to run the 50" Gatorback with the marks at "worn out" and not worry about it. I tightened up the Alt. belt a bit, think it might have been squeeking too since it'd do it when I put the rear window defroster on, which puts a load on the Alt. and makes it harder to turn.

If I get a chance tomorrow, I'll measure the tensioner pulley on mine. (It is the 17mm ear style) Then you can see if yours is a different size than the normal ones. Not that it will solve anything, but maybe your sanity.
OK the O.D. is 70mm (2.756")
Now, not that it would be worth the hassle of removing the assy to swap pulleys, IDK if the I.D. would be the same for the mount. It would be too much effort to research, just to find that it won't fit, if the O.D.'s are different.
Hope this gives you a little more insight to your belt issue.

My tensioner has a 1/2" square hole in it for the Tensioner wrench or a 1/2" drive breaker bar OR you can make up a tool like I did that'll fit into the square hole. I wonder if it's been replaced at some time and they got the wrong one? It's such a PITA to get to, don't know if I can get into it to remove it or not. At least I know I can't in this 20 deg. weather we've been having here in Tennessee lately. Maybe after it warms up a bit I'll see if I can pull off the tensioner.

I have no idea where Modern Performance got their belt sizes. They're not right at all.

The belts I got from modern seem to fit fine. I don't have a tension checker tool so I can't say for sure. The alt belt fits right in the middle of the adjustment so I can make it loose or tight (I have it pretty tight right now). And the AC/PS belt fits a bit loose IMO but does the job just fine as far as I can tell. I forgot the sizes they sent me...
