Engine "sputter"?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Engine "sputter"?

Post by arlenok » Mon Aug 04, 2008 12:29 am

Whats up. I've had this problem for a while and it never really bothered me, but, when slowing down from about 25 mph, my car makes this sputtering kind of noise. The thing is, it stops after I get below maybe 15 mph. What the heck is that?
And when coming to a full stop, my car kinda "jumps" as if its coming to a stop, but then does this jumpy thing where it feels like I'm going over a bump. This happens when I'm 5 mph or lower. Would that just be warped disks? That's what I'm hoping it is.
Any help would be appreciated because: 1. I don't have any cash for a mechanic to check it out and 2. I'm heading off for college in about a week, so I'd prefer my car be in to shape, since I won't be able to work on it there.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone might throw at me!

I have similar problems with mine. I thought it was the spark plugs and wires...didn't change anything. I'm thinking it's a sensor or something

That could be rear brake shoes shifting back when you stop. My Jeep does the same thing.

What year is your car, '03+? Do you have a tachometer? If so, when it happens, what RPMs are you at?

Damn, I've got the same "jump" thing when I'm coming to a complete stop. I was thinking the rotors were glazed by improper break in. Like the pads were heated but not cooled properly causing 1 small section of the rotor to glaze. Usually warped rotors cause the wheel to shake and happens at all speeds.

That rear shoe comment makes me wonder though. I have new shoes waiting to be installed, just been too hot lately. Maybe the rear drum is out of round, not sure.

Nah, it's an 02. As far as RPM's I haven't checked that, so I'll look at that when I'm driving today.
I've changed my plugs and wires so I know it's not that. I'm guessing the jumpy stop thing is a brake problem. I wanna know what's causing the sputtering though.

Do you have the OEM exhaust? maybe something is rusted or loose internally that makes that sound when that specific volume of air is passing through. Does it go away when you accelerate? My exhaust vibrates when decellerating from 4K rpm or so.

Well I have an aftermarket exhaust which has a leak after the cat, because the of size difference. I just havent noticed it until about a month ago. I'm hoping it's just an exhaust leak though

If by "jump" you're referring to coming to a complete stop and it slides backwards a fraction of an inch, then everyone has that...

I know that much... It has a jumping motion before coming to a full stop, when I'm moving <5mph with my brakes on.

I haven't seen if your car's ATX or MTX but it might be an ATX tranny issue; It may be a possible vacuum leak too?

It's ATX. I recently noticed that my drum brake is leaking brake fluid (?!). That might be another cause

Hmm, if you have the 3 speed, try having your bands adjusted in the trans. Mine occasionally does that as well.
