A list of things to do

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

A list of things to do

Post by 2k1MotorSport » Thu Aug 14, 2008 11:45 am

Ok... I'm looking for opinions here and maybe some insight.

I'm currently thinking about buying a beater for this winter so i can undertake this project.

Since I brought the R/T home it has been leaking oil but more now for some reason. I still don't know where it is coming from (have not had time to look around)

My trans is making a lot of chatter. Not sure if it's the TOB or not. The shifter on top of the trans has also been leaking since i bought the car. When the trans fluid was changed 1 1/2qt came out and 4qt went back in. So something isn't right there.

What i'm thinking about doing is pulling the motor and fixing all the problems all at once. I would also do the timing belt and water pump. I would probably pull the head and do the head gasket. But when it comes to the trans what should I do? I was thinking about getting a new trans from the dealer and a new clutch/flywheel/ and TOB. And while i'm at it, i may replace the cat since mine is making quite a bit of noise.

Sadly this car was kept in horrible condition before i bought it 9 months ago.

Lets hear it people.

you would have to buy a beater for the winter as this project will take quite a bit of time, money, and effort to complete.... unless you have a spare somewhere...

how many miles are on the car? If it only has 20,000 then the water pump and timing belt don't really need to be replaced for a while; however, I'm assuming there are quite a few miles on it since it's leaking oil and trans fluid. So yes, you should do both.

Replacing the head gasket is not necessary since you have the MLS head gasket which is very good. I think you do, but I could be wrong, so check on that.

Transmission? hmm... you got me. I would not buy a new one unless you had to. Try to find an srt-4 T-850 trans. It'll be a good upgrade and may come with a warrantee. Also, check the clutch at the same time.

The cat is an easy bolt on if you like it stock, or if you can weld get a magnaflow or something and take a hacksaw to the old pipe and weld in the new.

Good luck with all the work!

Well as far as i know the R/T cat is different than stock models. But i would probably have a magnaflow put in there.

Is the SRT trans a direct bolt on? What all would i need for that?

Mileage for the car is about 75k

What sound does a TOB make? I want to know cuase my tranny is kinda noisy if I accelerate after a shift in the 1800-2300 rpm range. Sounds like a diesel truck LOL.

I would stick with the R/T trans or a 3.55 T350 if you're looking to gain a few mpg. The SRT T850 is heavier and most likely doesn't come with a 3.94 ratio. If you spend the $ on an SRT MTX you might as well get the engine to go with it. The selector shaft bushings are prolly worn out if its leasking oil from them. Also there should be a vent on the MTX. I can't honestly say where it is located, but there needs to be a way for hot air to escape, otherwise pressure builds and forces oil out. The vent may not be functioning properly.
As for engine leaks, The cam seals leak with higher mileage,(this would include the CPS seal), the oil senders tend to leak, rocker cover possibly and rear main. On mine the cam seal behind the gear, and the CPS seal were the biggest offenders. They are prolly the cheapest to buy, but the one behind the cam gear would be the biggest pain to replace, other than the rear main, (if you weren't replacing the timing belt.)

Patience, of course, is a very powerful weapon, but sometimes I start to regret that it is not a firearm.
Too much time spent here is a sign of a bad case of Ownaneonvirus.
