Fuel Filter

Post by GreeNeons03 » Fri Sep 26, 2008 1:19 pm

Where's the fuel filter at on the Neon and how do you change it? I've noticed I'm not going as far as I used too on a full tank of gas and I think that a dirty fuel filter may be contributing to my problem.

Your Neon doesn't have a fuel filter other than the little pick-up sock at the bottom of the pump.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Negatory. Fuel filter is inegrated into the fuel pressure regulator. It's a pretty low maint item, don't need to change it as much as a regular fuel filter. Cost was about $65 from the dealer when I got it last.

How to fix your car:
1. Buy a Haynes manual
2. Read Haynes maual
3. Read and search appropriate threads, trust us, it's been covered before
4. Fix car
5. Consume beer of job well done

I didn't bring that up because stamped on the side of it in big letters are the words "DO NOT SERVICE"

But yes, that is a filter of sorts. It's supposed to be a lifetime item

*Edit* Ignore that first part...I was thinking of the 1st gen units. Fixitmattman is correct that it is part of the regulator. Part #5278631AA....MSRP $131.00

I thought it was stuck inside of the tank and a complete bitch to get to. Not to mention it's supposed to last forever.

You can buy the sock/filter seperate - I changed mine at 100k - looks like a white square - prob wouldnt do it again - wait til the pump fails - then replace the unit
2000 LX 3sp Auto, 201,000 miles, Orig engine and trans - both have never been apart other than reg maint. 33 mpg

There should be no reason to change that unless something got into the fuel that plugged it. Then you may as well replace the pump due to the added stress/wear from fuel not flowing through it. Chances are it will fail a lot sooner, then you'll be pulling it again anyways.
If you have the fuel rail with the test port, fab a connector and do a flow test. Or pay a shop/have someone help to do it if you don't know how. Better safe/poorer than crispy.

Sparkplugs
Oil
Tire pressure
Ignition wires

These are all bigger factors in fuel mileage, then the fuel filter. Check these before worrying about the fuel pump/filter.

especially on the tire inflation...

The fuel filter is supposed to last for as long as you own your car. There is no need to replace it or service it.

That only holds true if the fuel giong in is clean. Metal tanks stay clean inside, till they rust through....

They only rust on the inside if there is water in them, or they aren't filled/driven enough to keep condensation off the inside top.
Most stations have filters on the pump hoses, as where in the past they pulled whatever was in the inground tanks right through. Water of course will still get pumped into your tank.
But a plastic tank is still better IMHO.
