Upper motormount bolt broke! Or has been broken....

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Upper motormount bolt broke! Or has been broken....

Post by MyNeonSaysHi » Sun Sep 28, 2008 1:02 pm

Wow.... I thought that clunk noise was my control arm bushings. So I replaced one at school and was planning on doing the second one on Monday the 29th. Well low and behold I did a little launch and I heard that noise again, cept it was a bit louder. So I get home and let the car cool down for a bit and pop open the hood and discover my upper motor mount bolt was broke!

:(:(:(

So how the hell am I going to get that thing out? Centerpunch, drill, easy out? I remember when I did all my solid motormounts that it would be a good idea to upgrade the bolts. But I decided against it. I also used a tad bit of the red loctite when I was installing them last year. So I am probably going to need heat it up, maybe not. Any ideas on how I can get this fixed? Looks like those two bolts for that cap can come out and that piece can be replaced so I don't have to take that broken bolt out.

Haha finding a SRT-4 at junkyard won't happen. I have 2 guys that have a extra bracket laying around but....

Got it out without damaging the threads. Got a thread out kit from Autozone. Drilled a nice hole in the middle and put the thread out thing on the drill. IT came out! I also got a bolt over at Ace Hardware. Same grade except it doesn't have threads through out the entire thing. should work for now. Will order the upgraded ones from Modern.

If I were you, since you already have the solid motor mounts, I would get the stronger bolts that modern sells as well...

Just try to use a chisel to take it out, if not, drill and tap a new bolt in.
