So i right now have a short ram intake where the filter sits right above the whole where the resinator was. The main reason i got it was for the sound but now i have been reading that its better to just remove the box and drop in a kn drop in filter rather than a cai but i'm wondering if it would be better if i did that as well or am i close enough to it that it won't make a difference. I'll get a picture soon to help show what i mean.
Also the "bellow tube" i think its called the wiggly tube behind the tb. If i just put a straight piece of pipe in there is there any benefit other then cosmetics and maybe a bit louder? i can't find any hard info to agree or disagree

A really cheap setup that works really well is keeping the stock intake box but swith to a K&N or other aftermarket filter then remove the silencing chamber in the wheel well and the plastic tube that goes to the intake box. Next get a 3in dia. flexable shop vac hose from like wal-mart, shouldn't cost more than $10. Then run it from the fog light housing up and into the intake box.
Thus, the air get rammed in the hose (faster you go the more cold air you get). The nice thing about the box is that it traps all that cold air and acts as an insulator against engine heat. After a hard drive on the back roads the intake box would be very cool, especially in comparison to the rest of the bay. It makes a noticable difference especially around 60-70mph
The only down side is that its quieter, but you can take of the box top and get the noise that way but sacrifice performance a lil!

I'm not sure about the sound with the added bellow's tube. I have a K&N CAI so mine didn't come with a replacement bellow's tube.
The air box is restrictive. Don't be fooled. The filter sits on the end of the throttle body. If you have the fender resonator installed the air going into the air box is only allowed the width of a quarter to enter the resonator and then it moves into the air box. If you remove the resonator air is allowed a 3" diameter (or so) space to move into the air box.
my k&n goes from the throttle body down to the side and sits right about the bottom of the bumper. It is also turned forward so that as I drive air goes directly into the filter. Some could call this ram air.... either way your cai shouldn't be hurting your performance or your mileage unless you drive like a maniac.
