Changing o2 sensor.

Well I'm getting about 18 mpg out of my 2000. I am either going to take it in and see what the garage says is wrong with it or just go ahead and change the o2 sensors since that's just about all I can think that's wrong with it. Question is does it take any kind of special tool to remove them? Obviously it doesn't look like you can just pop a socket on it and take it off. What kind of tools will I need? Is there ANY way to tell if they need changed without taking them off? The car isn't throwing any codees off. It is a little sluggish when going up hills but other than that, seems to be running fine aside from the horrible mileage.

If is the original, it wouldn't hurt to change it anyways.
Autozone, etc. sell o2 sockets for around $10. Soak it good with penetrating oil before attempting removal. If the o2 socket will not break it loose, then you may have to cut the wires off and use a regular socket to get a good enough grip. IIRC it is 7/8" or 15/16".

Yeah, it really sucks. As of last week I was only driving about 4 miles round trip to work and back. My shed got changed and now I'm doing 30 so I need to get this figured out ASAP. I'm happy gas is half of what it was though LOL. I'd be very mad.

All you need is a standard open-end wrench to remove it. 22mm IIRC.

Well I ended up taking it in and having a shop check it. They ran everything and no codes came up at all. They said fuel presure for my car should be between 47 and 50 psi, mine is at 48. The only thing they could recommend is better plugs. I had some cheapo Champions in it. Took this out and bought some NGK Iridium IX's #6418. Opinions welcome on this plug. I am pretty sure I saw some good remarks about NGK's plugs so I got them. For $7 each they better be good.
Anyways, not the O2 sensors. I did end up putting about $150 into the car for the plugs, having it scanned and got a new cone filter for the CAI. Hopefully I see an improvement in the mileage soon.

The iridium's are nice, but unless the spark plugs were old they weren't your problem.
Nothing wrong with cheap copper plugs in a neon.

No, your car doesn't like platnum plugs. No neon does.

Mine didn't seem to mind them. Got 40,000 out of some +4's
Can't say they worked any better than a copper plug tho. Meh
Champions will get that brown blowby too.
From the looks of that upper plug there is a sparkplug tube leaking oil in.

OP- Maybe the problem isn't your car, but your mileage calculations...

Nothing wrong with the calculations. I reset my trip every time. I get about 200 miles when I'm on E. Fill up, I think it's around 11 gallons. About the same mileage over and over again.
200/11=18.18!
