R/T Exhaust

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

R/T Exhaust

Post by GreeNeons03 » Tue Feb 10, 2009 12:38 am

I got my R/T rear section today but now I have questions.

1) Is it a direct bolt on or will I need some sort of adapter?
2) How to I take my current rear section off?
3) I assume it would be the opposite of taking of the current rear section, but in case it's not, how do I get the new rear section on?

I'm still learning how to do stuff. I'm a n00B! :tardbang:

Have fun with the metal hangers...they're terrible

The hangers can be bent. Well, the exhaust size is the same. As for everything else, I suggest getting down there and looking. But I think it's just a direct bolt on.

unless the previous owner cut the exhaust off, then you might need to get it welded

1) It is a direct bolt on. You might need a 2.0" to 2.25" exhaust adapter and one exahust clamp. I've put an r/t rear section on a 2002 ES and it didn't need an adpter. I put one on a 2004 SXT and it needed an adapter. :tardbang: But there shouldn't be any cutting required, just bolts.

2) By the drivers side rear tire there is a clamp on the stock exhaust. Loosen it. Then there are two rubber hangers on the left and right side of the muffler. Get a screwdirver and pry them off the muffler. Last, pUll the muffler off the exhaust piping near the drivers side rear tire. This is likely to be the most difficult part! :banghead: It's likley to be seized on there.

3) Same as taking off. But you might have to place an adapter piece on the connection first. Leave all clamps loose untill the muffler is on the rubber hangers. You might have to bend the metal portions of the hangers so the tips don't rub on the fascia.(You could also modify the rubber hangers to make them longer (therefore making the tips hang lower).)

An exhaust shop could probably install it for $20-$40.

^ Thanks! Hopefully I won't run into too many problems. I hope to get it done sometime this week.

^ That's the one I used. Though a 2.0” to 2.25” adapter from any local auto parts store should work too.
