emissions help!

I was not really sure where to put this so i put it here.

i did some searching but i could not find a def. answer so i thought i would ask.

one of these days i will either want to do the srt4 swap or build my engine and turbo it idk which yet.

however i need this car to pass emissions. I just talked to an emissions guy and he told me it is illegal to do the srt4 swap, but as long as you do not have any codes/check engine light you should pass because right now they do not check your vin on the dash and compair it to what the computer says, thats the same with the miles. But he said they may eventually be doing something where they do check both. idk when but yeah.

and my second option is to turbo the 2.0. As far as i know the car will have a check engine light because of the boost. is there any way around this?

any input woudl be great!! I live in Wash county in WI so if anyone is under the same rules as me and could help that would be even better.

please help!! lol

thanks guys and girls :)

As far as I know, you can have the computer you use in the swap flashed to match your vin. That's how they get the Mopar Stage whatever PCUs to match your car.

Swapping an engine is not illegal, lol. Swapping a stolen engine is illegal. I'd say (based on what you've said) just go for the SRT4 swap.

do you know how much it cost to do that...can they do miles too?

and ur right its not illegal if its the same engine. 2.0 and 2.4 arent the same i thought it was legal but the guy told me otherwise

It is only a "violation" if the engine was never offered in that car platform.(and there are work arounds for that) Ask him how Monster Miata's were legally sold. 302 mustang enginge shoehorned in/smog legal.

Or the engine is an older model year than the body it is going into. Usually not a problem here. Tho, as long as the PCM/emissions are retained it isn't going to be an issue, unless you make it one.

hmm im thinking i could get away with that...

how about turboing the 2.0? how do you get around that and still pass?

The federal law says it's legal if:

1. The engine was epa certified on your particular chassis (both 2.0 and 2.4 are certified for the neon)

2. The oem emissions systems are intact and functioning properly.

So pretty much it's legal federally, but your state may have certain laws against it. You'll have to call your local attorney general's office to find out your specific state laws, unless you can find it on the internet.

I don't think I have ever seen anyone on the forum with a SRT swap in your area. Doesn't mean there aren't any, but it might be difficult to find them. Do you have any sort of local car scene or forum? Might want to start there.

Go research the actual law. A lot of guys doing the tests are morons.

What all do they do at emmissions testing? They don't have that here in Florida, that's why I ask. :)

They stick some shit in ur tailpipe n run the car on a dyno type machine. 1 run at 15mph and a 2nd run at 25mph. Then they check your gas cap for some odd reason. And i tink they hook up to ur OBD port shit and check for codes. its a lame process...

actually they dont run it on the dyno here at least they just plug it in and check the gas cap lol thats it...

Here in Ca they run the dyno and check the emissions and the gas cap is just the pressurized gas to check for any leaks in the fuel system
