With my earlier Dodges, I used to do oil changes, lubrication, etc. when I had access to my father's garage and tools (and his supervision, bless his heart) but have nothing like that now since the family home was sold after his death. I bought the extended warranty since I didn't inherit the "handyman gene". I have had some people really get on my case for buying an SRT since I don't work on cars myself but that is their problem... I bought what I wanted, whether they like it or not.
right on!

I would go with the o2 sensor ground being wacked, or the upstream o2 being bad. It says the engine is lean, so it's giving it fuel it doesn't need. (Carbon/soot kind of verify's that) the down stream is also telling the PCM it's rich, but it has no short term input to help the situation.
As long as it isn't run for a month or two like this, there prolly isn't any serious damage done.

Thanks, I needed that!
Yeah, the dealership called and it looks like another O2 sensor, the PCV valve, plugs, wires and a carbon cleanout- all to the tune of about $220

. I'll know for sure when I pick the car up this afternoon.

"Internal failure both O2 sensors and MAP sensor 1.50 test and both O2 sensors are reading wrong to high of adapitive (sic) specs, replaced up and down stream O2 sensors, and found MAP sensor oil residue, replaced MAP sensor also"
4 cylinder tuneup, replace plug wires, PCV valve = $218.70

after warranty items.
My mechanic says the problem is that I'm "Granny-ing" my car by not opening it up on a regular basis. Well, guilty as charged. The service manager encouraged me to take it to a drag strip

so maybe I should try that (for the first time!). The mechanic also told me (off the record) that I should get a catch can. Now
that's a completely new area for me, aftermarket items. I'll need a lot of advice from people here on what to do about that.

Yup, opening it up is good. Hell I do it everyday lol

Take off the training wheels, Gramps! You can do it. We're pulling for you!!

SRTs are known for filling up their intercoolers with oil at the benefit of being emissions legal. A catch can is the best way to get rid of it. If you want to be really cool, you can run the drain of it back to the oil pan so you never have to empty it.

Guess that I had that coming but I'm surprised that you beat TiNK to it.

Maybe that can be the 2009 Carlisle Project?

^^Nice thought. Sad thing is that I haven't budgeted for parts like that, only for the Carlisle expenses. A catch can will probably have to wait although I am worried that I will have a repeat engine experience while I am on the road there or back and get stuck...

You can get a good catch can for $20 or less and takes a few minutes to install.

How about this?
I give you my catch can. The only downside is it's powder coated silver. And we would have to come up with a place to put it because if I remember correctly you have a stock airbox.

Thanks for your generosity Frank! Yeah, I still have the stock airbox (the car is stock everything LOL). One of the members of the local SRT club has offered to install one on my car for free if I provide the can (he suggested the GReddy) and says that it can be mounted underneath the stock airbox... I'm thinking about it.

hmmm, under the airbox? don't know how that would work. Ask him what it would hook up too.
If the non-SRT and SRT airboxes weren't so different I would swap airboxes with you and then it would be mounted in the airbox and no one would see it.
We can figure something out. My can is a BWoody can, its a nice piece.

Doesn't it need a check valve for boosted applications?
Posted: Thu Apr 30, 2009 12:39 pm
by racer12306
It depends on the design of the PCV valve, if it has a check valve in it or not. I may need one. Those are pretty cheap and easy to get.

You're supposed to put a check valve on it as they say the stock PCV doesn't always do it's job. But you don't have to right away.

I'm still debating about this... The whole possibly voiding my warranty thing really concerns me. Guys in my local SRT club say that it can be mounted in a way that allows quick disconnect so that it wouldn't be detectible by a dealership. I am also being told that the under-the-airbox location makes the can unseen unless the car is on a lift.

If there was ever a mod that was easily reversed in order to keep your warranty, this would be it. We wouldn't steer you wrong gramps, we know how you feel about your car and modding it

Well, some dealers are going to be asshats and try to void your warranty no matter what. I wouldn't put it past a dealer to do it, and honestly if they're working on your car they're going to see it...no point in trying to "hide" it.
If it's that much of a concern, I would keep your stock PCV line so you can swap it out whenever you go to the dealer.
Like I said, takes 1 min tops to swap out the line with the catch can.

Gramps,
They can not void your warranty for an aftermarket part being installed. If the so called aftermarket part contributes to a so called problem trying to be covered under warranty and they have proof that the aftermarket part is the cause, then and only then they can opt to void your warranty or not cover the so called problem under warranty...
For Ex:
CAI install, motor comes in to the dealership with a no start condition.Technician pulls the CAI off the engine and finds water in the intake manifold.Engine won't run because its hydrolocked. The cause, water injestion through the aftermarket intake caused hydrolocking of the engine.
That is a simple and quick way to explain how they can not cover a part under warranty. If the car had a trani problem and they were blamming the CAI for it, thats a case were the dealership is being a dickhead....

Thanks everyone for the advice. I don't mean to come across as being super sensitive about this but I've never had anything aftermarket on my cars. Heck, even my high school Schwinn bicycle went to the Schwinn dealership annually for a check up and always had geniune Schwinn parts and accessories on it. Wow, after reading that back, I'm really a geek.
I'm going to get back with the locals about putting this on. I still have to order a catch can first. Is Modern Performance the best place to order a GReddy or should I look elsewhere?

Always try to go to a 5 star dodge/chrysler dealer as well, they are usually much more lenient about mods.

Personally I would get a BWoody can. I don't think anyone has anything back to say about them and I know mine has held up well. Plus BWoody is a small time place.

Just do not get the eBay catch can like I have, it works but not well

Which catch can did you purchase?
I have the greddy knock off and it's amazing. Came with teflon tape on the barb threads and everything, very nice piece.

i have mine run into the stock air box can sits under the filter then back out to intake side looks clean and looks like just air lines

Damn where have I been in this thread?!?!?
I change my plugs every other oil change in the SRT-4. It only costs me $8.XX! Turbo cars like fresh spark plugs and it seems pretty common we SRT guys change our plugs very often.
Charge you $64 to empty out your intercooler by simply undoing a clamp pulling off hose and letting it poor out! Thats outrageous.
I recommend the Bwoody too. The Greddy catch can is huge and ugly IMO. Bwoody is small and sleek, has a baffle in it and is a completely sealed unit. Make sure you get a checkvalve with it.
It can be mounted on your battery tray with your stock airbox. Or on the radiator bracket.
Its actually good to go WOT in the car once in a while. Helps to keep the injectors clean.

Really? This is only the second plug change I have had in 35K+ miles.
I have looked at the BWoody one and like the fact that colors are available (the GReddy one looks unfinished IMO). Still thinking about this plus I don't have the cash at the moment.
Car goes in for 36K maintenance early next week. This is the first car where I almost made the 3 year portion of the warranty before running out of miles.
