The Bellows in a 01 Neon

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Because the engine moves, and the air box doesn't.

so why does AEM make a solid pipe to replace the bellows tube in their CAI? I've seen the thread about making a solid pipe yourself and the drawing done to do it, but if that pipe comes loose it would suck.

Basically, DCX wasn't going to put something on that could come loose, and leave them liable.
How well do you think a hard pipe with two silicone/ rubber connectors will stay in place with a torn torque strut or two?
Eventually something is going to give.

Yes a smart person will keep those in good shape. But take your average cell phone yakin' never check under the hood driver, and you get the point.

The aftermarket CAI's have enough give in them to allow for movement. The factory air box is held firmly in place by at least three points. (Properly installed)

Remember: What you do to your car, and the resulting failure, if any, is your responsibility.
