How do I get the power steering belt to stop squeeking?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

How do I get the power steering belt to stop squeeking?

Post by DroopDaddy408 » Tue May 12, 2009 6:48 pm

Mods: pls move if this is the wrong section.

When I bought my car 8 months ago my power steering belt wouldnt stop squeeking/ squeeling/ schreeching... whatever. Friend told me it was self adjusting. I noticed my power steering pulley was "chipped" on the wall of the pulley facing the passenger side. I bought a new one for like $14 had it installed at the mom and pop place I bought the car. When I picked up the car the squeeking was gone but when I got home I noticed my new pulley was chip the same way but on the opposite side. My friend said they must of used a universal puller. So now my damn belt dont stop squeeling. Is that chip the source of the noise?? Sorry for the rambling.

PS belts are serp belts and I'm pretty sure your not supposed to use belt dressing on those. Only on the V-belts.

The tensioner itself may be shot.

I've already used plenty of belt dressing. Doesnt help at all. I guess it could be tensioner. It's purtty friggin embarrassing when I got my car all G'd up and I pull up next to some hotties at a light and all they hear is Alvin and the chipmunks under my hood. :banghead:

Most likely the tensioner/motor mount plate. They are not cheap, and for a first time job a PITA (if you don't have any patience). How many miles are on the timing belt? Because if you are near 105,000 you may as well do the related stuff there also, as you will be 3/4 of the way there. changing the tensioner. Of course that's more $$. But cheaper than a new engine.

Edit: When Miss Neontis is done with you, there will be no $ for hotties. Just forget about those. :P

Patience, of course, is a very powerful weapon, but sometimes I start to regret that it is not a firearm.

I dont know how many miles the timing belt has. I bought the car about 8months ago with 94,000 miles on it. I just past 102,000. All I've done is plugs, wires, and oil changes.

A couple of my motor mounts need to be replaced. The top one by the belts and the lower one on the bottom on the same side. They are both "cracked". I dont know if that has anything to do with it, tho.

Since 105,000 is the recommended interval, I would start saving...

I doubt it has been done. There is a reason a lot of neons are for sale around the 90k to 110K mark. PPL find out how much it is going to costs for a shop to do it, and get rid of the car.

60K per my FSM

Oh and to the OP: Are you positive it's the PS belt? How did you diagnose it?
