would an '01 head work on '03 block?
i've tried using the search and there is not a clear answer.

As long as they both are 2.0 heads, yes. The main difference is the pistons.

that too, but as for compression...
The bolt pattern, gasket etc are the same. The head/intake manifolds/some exhaust manifolds, are about the only things that are swappable with out affecting something.
The pistons can be swapped, but IDK if much else can. I want to say the rods, but they do have different PN's between NGC and earlier.
