i don't think you NEED power steering, but you're gonna build a hell of an arm w/o it.

If you haven't checked it an a long time, it's normal for the level to be low. Mine seems to go through a few ounces every 6 months or so with absolutely no leaks to be found.

Possible failures:

Hose
Gear
Pump

Just look around for a leak. Fluid will be thin and dark.

delete power steering. There's only more resistance at low speeds when turning the wheel.

just try to add some fluid and see if it leaks again. mine makes horrible noise when turning if it is leaking.

btw, original manu said ATX fluid is actually added as PS fluid... so we don't buy specific PS fluid right?...

true, drive without ps will build your arms... i have a tiny chevy metro geo w/o ps sit in front of the street and it's a pain to drive it...

Certain years used actual PS fluid, newer '03? -up went back to ATF.

I know '01 uses PS fluid.
Also check the bellows at the tierods. Mine has a gear leak. every now and then it drips fluid from the bellows.

Whatever you do, do not mix fluid types.
