Can anyone tell me what symptoms you should look for when engine mounts on a 2001 neon go bad?

I find if ai suddenly accelarate from stop to go the car thumps a bit...Like there is some sort of bad movement...

If I drive normal its ok?

look at them, if they look ripped or torn or weather cracked they are prolly bad. i also think if they go bad there is more vibration in the wheel when it idles .. i could be wrong though but thats what mine did! someone else might wanna chime in!

That happened when my jack collapsed as I was jacking the car up. And yes, mine had the thumping noise you described.

if you have a hard time shifting...my car has a rough time shifting sometimes and when i got my oil changed the guy said i had a broken engine mount...I asked if that what could be causing sticky/bad shifting he said yea it could.

You prolly have a manual trans but.....

If you have an auto trans, you can try brake-torquing while someone stands outside the car (with the hood up) and watches the engine for movement.

In other words; put your left foot on the brake, put the vehicle in drive and hit the gas a little. The engine should start bucking/moving excessively if you have a broken mount. If your top strut mount is broken like the one shown in the above pictures, the person outside the car will be able to clearly see it when you do this. It should also vibrate excessively in the vehicle when you do this...at least that's how it was with my broken mounts.
