i've been wondering for some time now... is there a difference between the 2000 and 2003 pcm? i just replaced a blown motor in my 2000 neon with a 2003 motor(thats what the guy told me).
Its running fine but if im loosing a lil power from it that would suck! lol

You've been told wrong. They don't work. May as well take the motor out of your washing machine and expect your PCM to run it.

U probably are loosing power but its not the PCM's fault. The 03-05 motor has a lower compression ratio. 00-02 engines had a slightly higher compression ration. Otherwise as long as u use the orig. 00 sensors and harness the org. computer will still work.

It's not an 03 motor if its running. swapping in an 03 requires swapping all the engine harness and computer from an 03+

o good call u learn something new every day, but in his post he says the car is running so i am assuming he swapped out just the head or the bottom end? I think we need some more input on this one.

0_m_3_n: what did the shop tell you went bad on the neon? Did he tell you specifically what he changed out?

I doubt a shop would go through the trouble of a ngc swap like that. It's more likely the engine was a 00-02 so you should be good.

Was it the pistons that lowered the compression on the 03+? If so, even the head wouldn't change much.

ragek - The show told him they put an 03 motor in there, thats why we said that shop is full of shit lol.

The shop may be just as ignorant as the JY it got the engine from. They are just lucky they got an '02 - older engine, or the dumbasses would still be scratching their heads.

the car seems to be running like normal (idle n everything) but it just has no balls.

i actually bought the car for $150 and seen an 03 motor for 350 on craigslist so i went for it. i wasn't planning on having them put it in though but it sounded cheap. they did the "swap" for 300 in 3 days.

when i had bought the car from a friend he said he blew the motor and it wouldn't start even when i had a friend check it out (i wouldn't know what to look for )

If you can see under it well enough, look above the oil filter, see if there is an electrical connector to a sensor. should be directly above the aluminum filter housing that bolts to the block, and the filter screws onto. That would be the crank position sensor. You may need to be under the car to see it.

Edit: Also key "on" three times. Do not engage the starter, just to the run position. Leave it in the on position the last turn. See if there are any codes stored. They should display on the odometer. Then it should say "dONE" when finished, or there are no codes.

It means it is an '02 or older engine.

There should be a machined area near the starter, lower part of the block. That spot has something stamped there. I'm not sure what is stamped there tho. I guess it never got the best of my couriosity.

I'm sure if you posted it, someone could tell you what it means.

An NGC block will have the crank sensor near the ID code.

\/ 1995-2002 block. Notice the CkPS hole is between the #1 and #2 cklinder and is located on the exhaust side right above the oil filter (where the cylinder block and the bed plate mate).

\/ 2003-2005 block. Notice the CkPS hole is between the #4 cylinder and the rear of the engine (where the cylinder block and the bed plate mate).

As the pictures above show, the NGC block has the crank position sensor on the front of the block near the bellhousing where the non-NGC has it located in the rear....
03+ block's will not work in 02under vehicles without complete harness/pcm swaps or a standalone engine management system....
