I am going to changing my timing belt soon. I went to the parts store to order a timing belt kit and they asked me if i have a mechanical or hydraulic tensioner. Is there a easy way of knowing which one it is because I have one full day, maybe two and I don't want my car down for a whole week because I had to tear it down and check to see which one I need to order. I know they changed but I am not sure when they changed. The production date on the car is Jan 2004 if that would help.
Thanks!

It would be the mechanical.
4884320AA Tensioner, neon, all - 2.0l, sohc 2003 - 2005 MSRP $114.00
I think Rock Auto .com Has kits for much less.

That's a much better price than I thought the kit would be!

Yeah, Rockauto is great. I get all my non-OEM stuff there. Look around online for a current 5% discount code.

I have the Gates WP, and have no issues after about 30,000 miles.

Ah, that's great! I am going to be ordering that soon because I just hit 98200 and my warranty doesn't run out until i hit 100k. Also, I am getting CEL Code P0572 and It says something about cruise control, which I don't have on the car, I was told to change my brake light switch and that would fix my CEL.

I just installed this kit last weekend. Do yourself a favor and spend another $8 or so for the accessory tensioner pulley. Mine was worn down the middle pretty badly at 115k miles.

Thanks for your all your input! BTW, where is this accessory tensioner because I cannot find it on my car, I might not be looking hard enough or something.

No difference. The "bracket" is only available at the dealer. If the spring is good, you may just want to replace the pulley. The MM bracket is over $300 list.
