Whistling Noise on cold starts ?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Whistling Noise on cold starts ?

Post by elstopneon » Tue Oct 20, 2009 11:41 am

In the morning when i start up my car, and I push the gas alittle bit I can hear a little whistling noise coming from under the hood. To my assumption i know it's one of my belts. But do know which one. Would it be easier if i try to fix the problem myself or have a shop do it?

Could be alot of things really. Mine just started doing it recently and I think it's my AC compressor pulley. Could also be the water pump, that's what happened on my Eclipse right before the water pump went on it.

Could also be the IAC valve, due to it being open more to maintain cold idle speed. The increased air flow may be whistling. Just check at the air filter when it is making the noise. Should be easy to confirm/eliminate it as the cause. If it is, the only thing that may help is cleaning the TB.

:laughing3:  That was a good laugh.

But seriously, the IAC seems like a very good possibility. I only asked about the CAI because it would magnify the whistling a whole bunch.
