Head Work

Wont go into the full boring story, but basically getting a 2.0L head for free if I want it.

Now, I've sifted through quite a few threads on here, as well as an Allpar write up, but haven't been able to find a dedicated source regarding head work on the 2.0 2nd gen. (If there is a thread, link me and I'll stfu lol)

But, asking you all, the professionals, is it worth doing? Since I'll still be able to DD my car, and this can get done whenever founds are available, what should I look into?

What type of valve job is preferred? Any mill specs I should go for or stay away from? And since I'll be in there when it comes time to do it, (also, I'll knock out my timing belt since I'll be about that time) should I consider the Crane 400 cam everyone's on about?

Also, given the cam and head, should I look into springs and retainers, or will the stockers prevail just fine?

Also, the little I have found on the topic recommends a cam gear to advance timing. Is that correct? Something to look into?

Like the name says, Jeeps are my thing, Neons I'm still getting used to, lol. And keep in mind this is all just kind of a extra thing, so money (hopefully over a period of time) really wouldn't be an issue. I just kind of plan to gather parts and get everything ready over a few months, then slap it all on in one shot.

Any and all feedback is appreciated.

Depends on what you are planning to do with the engine. Just head work or do you plan on doing more later on. If just doing the head since you have another mill 0.030 put the COMP 400 in there and a set of crane springs. You may also want to look into a SAFC to tune a little. If your interested I have brand new comp 400 cam and the crane springs if your interested. Decided to go a different way with my project.

?? :tardbang:

And I've seen you all use those codes, too timid to ask what they are. I'm assuming their designation codes, much like Jeep used; Cherokee - XJ, 93-98 Grand Cherokee - ZJ, 99-04 Grand Cherokee - WJ and so on.

But I have no idea which category mine falls into.

NGC is something that is used in all 03 and up neons. Theres TONS of information about it around the fourms. search it and you will find out everything youd ever want to know about it.

The Comp Cams 200/400 are designed to use oem valve springs.

The most you would need are Magnum springs, which can be had from the dealer for less than $100. They come with new retainers. You can re use the keepers/locks.
