Driving my car and the engine stopped on me.. **Update #3**

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

The head is screwed.

The camshaft gear could spin by itself and move in and out freely.. reason why..

Camshaft broke...
Image

There is also some marks on the piston head on cyl 4 but its not too bad.

I need to find info on what I need for a 2.4 swap, or else im just grabbing a head from the JY.

How the fuck do you break a cam?

The only time we broke a cam is when a connecting rod decided to make sweet, sweet lovins to it.

I guess I should have specified the CPS end. :D

I would be curious as to why it broke. Did it seize in the head from an oil passage obstruction?

Wow, that is incredibly awesome. My car died a similar death. When cranking, I could hear valves on pistons. So I bought a 2.4 to throw in it before even popping the hood. 2 weeks later, life is good.

That's what I told him. Like wtf lol. Like OC said, would more then likely have to be due to oil loss.

An idea from another thread, check the CPS. If the thrust surface is worn/out of spec, the cam might have walked enough to break.

Edit, since you replaced it, maybe the replacenent is not correct.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, and assume you did not start it without it installed, or tightened all the way.

I've never heard of that happening before.... Is that a known issue ??

Most Neon engines OVERlubricate the cylinder head, according to what I have heard.... :dontknow:

Edited above post.

Overlubing is a good thing, but at least the cam lubing is better than the 2.2s in the eighties. The cam lobes were lubed by slots in the bearing caps. If you had the misfortune of buying a neglected car, the slots would be varnished shut. Thus wiping out the lobes. Yes I've been there. I will take a little extra precaution any day.

Oh, i never got to putting the new belt on and checking compression.. When i tried looping the belt over the cam gear the thing spun and moved out (thats when i realized something was wrong in the head).

Went to the junkyard today, got a non-mag head from a very nice 2001 neon that the owner was OCD on everything maintenance wise.

There was an almost new o2 sensor in the exhaust manifold that found it's way into my pocket. The car's next oil change was due at 70k (or january 2010) and the timingbelt was replaced (it had a brand name written on it, i think delco?).

The head seems to be in great shape as well. Did that water test that Sean (hybrid?) told me about! Thanks Sean!

So now i need to port the head.. Time for more research!

The Comp 400 is about as big as I would want to go without something to tune it with. That and mag springs work just fine for em, so you don't have to shell out for cranes unless you want to.

Do youself a favor and get a set of head studs. You'll thank yourself next time you take the head off. If not, the next owner will thank you.

Yeah, i was told the comp 400 is a nice cam without having to tune.

I always change my head bolts, no one other than me is going to own the neon.. I'm driving it till it dies

And be careful porting. Last thing you want to do is get into a water jacket on that nice head.

Yeah I found a good website where a guy did a port job on his sohc head.. Its a decent write up, so sometime near the end of march im going to port the head.. The camshaft wont ship from summitracing until the end of march, so I'm not in any hurry.

Just wish aamco would hurry the hell up with my truck, i really need it! I have to install the new carb and get the timing a little better for the 2gn meet on saturday.

Well here is the pictures of the camshaft broken..

Image

Image

I got a comp 400 camshaft now, im going to be porting out this head that i got from the junkyard (61 bucks).

The head looks new and has a barcode on it... So it doesn't have many miles on it.. Atleast from everything I saw (new timingbelt, waterpump, oxygen sensor, the oil in the head was the same color as it sits in the bottle).. I think they did the work and totaled it right afterwards.

So yeah, thats where I stand with my car now. I'm going to be working on porting some of it out tonight

Being it has new everything tells me it has over 90k on it...

Or it's just a pretty much brand new head.

Well it had a sticker on the windshield saying that the next oil service was due Jan 2010 or 72,xxx miles.

But the head on the junkyard car isn't the stock one.
