darn PCV valve help.

Post by Neon4Life » Fri Apr 23, 2010 4:37 pm

So plain and simple i was tightening the PCV valve back on when all of a sudden it went snap and half the piece is inside with the threads and the other half laying here.

i need to know how to fix this.. i need the car running like rite now rite now. lol. i might end up buying a new valve cover at the junk yard but i still wanted to ask if there was a way to get it out.

shove a large screw driver or knife into it and twist.

I've tried both.

I'm currently sitting here with the valve cover off trying to figure out how to take it out.

The screw driver thing didn't work because all it kept doing was shearing away at the plastic..as our pcv valves are plastic.

Yeah, unless you can get the plastic to hold, instead of peeling away...

I can't recall, is there a brass insert there, or just plastic on plastic violence? If you can get enough of the plastic nipple carved out, you may be able to run a 3/8 pipe tap in there to clear out the rest.

I'm not home to look, but can you see the hole from the inside? Like could you start to screw the new pcv valve in to force the old one out? Or is there too much left and no threads showing.

ok the problem was that i had almost screwed it in all the way then it decided to break on me. so the entire piece was in there. i started by putting a flat head in there and trying to twist it out. that didnt work. i then got pissed and started chipping away at it. then i decided to grab a drill bit big enough and get some of the old PCV valve out of there. that worked a lil. then i used a thread chaser tool. cant remember if that is correct name.. but i managed to get the rest of the old pcv stuck in the threads out while making a new thread. i managed to get the new pcv valve in there like half way and thats how its gonna stay for now. i should be ok with it sticking half way out rite ?

I would throw some teflon tape on it to help it seal, but as long as you don't have a vacuum leak there, you should be fine. Like Bill said, I think getting a tap would be your best bet to clean it out.

Sounds like a line some horny guy uses on a girl... who lands up pregnant.

Holy crap, you must have tightened that PVC up pretty good. Like someone else mentioned use some teflon tape to seal up the connection and don't install it so tight.

there is a special kit for sale ... it's a kit ( don't know the name there ) to unscrew wood screws with a dammaged head.

you just drill a little hole in the thread end thats in your valve cover.

the kit has a thread that wil screw in and screws the damaged thread right out .. works briljant.

ill look up a pic for you ;)

heres the pic Image

you just put it in a drill ( not to fast !!! ) dril it counter clock wise ... and it hooks on to your damaged thread and turns it right out ;)

i've used it a 1000 times ( carpenter ) works brillant :)

You must have cross threaded the PCV. I can't see a PCV valve just breaking.

i did this when i took mine off to paint the valve cover, took me about 2 hours of beating on it with a screwdriver and hammer to get it to start spinning.

Yeah. I had to take it back off this morning and it wouldn't go back on..so I said screw it..and bought a new one at the junk yard. Then after 2 hours of cleaning the one from the junk yard I put it on.

The PCV is a pipe thread, it's not meant to be fully threaded in to the base of the hex, just until a firm seal is made. You could have got the broken threads out but I'm not even going to start on that.

How to fix your car:
1. Buy a Haynes manual
2. Read Haynes maual
3. Read and search appropriate threads, trust us, it's been covered before
4. Fix car
5. Consume beer of job well done

I use "Permatex Thread Sealant" on the threads of the PCV when installing.

Too much "Man Torque".

Like fixitmattman said, it just needs to be screwed in until it gets snug. The threads should self seal, but a little teflon tape or thread sealant shouldn't hurt.

Just be careful, as it might act as a lube, letting it thread farther than normal. The problem would be when it needs serviced again, that it may break trying to unscrew it.
