Catless downpipe + No Exhaust = suckfest

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Catless downpipe + No Exhaust = suckfest

Post by heydockyle » Tue May 25, 2010 2:04 am

So I put a pt cruiser borla header and a 2gn catless downpipe on my car. The car before had stock beginning, and then a side exit cat back with one resonator.

Well let me just say the car is the most annoying thing in the world, and it hurts my ears to drive. I need to have a high flow cat welded in or something. Really is so raspy and loud it's pathetic. I really don't even want to drive the fucking thing. It has a slight exhaust leak, and the side exit doesn't come all the way out the side, it blows onto the side of the car by the pinch weld. I'm hoping getting the exhaust welded where it leaks, and putting a tip on the end will help to fix some of the shitty ass sound.

4 hours of cutting and piecing together exhaust for it to sound like shit. Pisses me off.

Getting it out from under the body will help some, but it is still going to sound like ass. Being that short, even with a cat, it will be loud. A little less maybe, but that is the one negative with 16 valve engines (8 exhaust valves).

None of my 8 valve 4 bangers sounded as horrible as the neon engine with out a muffler.

I thought it was common knowledge that Neons sound like death with header back exhausts, lol. (Unless it's a cammed 1st gen DOHC)

Just ask me.

Yea, but I was hoping the resonator would do something to kill the rasp. I need a cat or an exhaust. The header setup also gets really really hot. Like as soon as you start the car.. That normal? Never had a header...

Yeah, sounds like mine lol. I read it's harder to kill raspiness due to a header. Might have to ditch the side exit and get a quality muffler. And my header gets very hot quick too, soon as I get the extra cash I'm gonna wrap that and my testpipe.

OK, I retract the Yoko Ono thing. That sounds much better than her.:D

Pretty sweet, it reverberates the speakers on my work PC!

Edit: And yes, the heat is normal. Unlike a cast manifold, the thin metal doesn't hold in the heat as well. Internal ceramic coating is the best solution. But not the cheapest.

Well it pulls better mid to top but feels like I lost a little bottom. Doesn't spin in first just hitting the gas now. That or I just can't hear it cuz the exhaust. I'm guessing some of it is cuz of the leaks

Bought a little turndown and a new gasket for the downpipe because it was leaking.

Soon I'm gonna buy some heat wrap and wrap it. Using Modern's 2 in wide wrap, how much will just one do? It doesn't say how much you get with it?

Welding in a high flow cat drastically reduces the raspiness. I went with the magnaflow 2.25".

That Moroso one is pretty cheap and looks decent.

Modern is cool and all, but they don't always have the best deals/stock for more universal items.

So the tip did me no good. Actually made the sound more annoying. My dad has a flowmaster exhaust off of a 2.2 turbo shadow and I'm going to take it to a local exhaust shop and see what it will cost to run piping from the downpipe back to the exhaust that will go in the stock location.

At the beginning of the video it's like oh this aint too bad. But then it's a different story.

EDIT:

So exhaust shop wanted $200 just to run piping back to the exhaust that I supplied, and I would have to wait a day. So i'm now looking into getting a whole exhaust system.

I may purchase dynomax piping off of MP and run it back into the muffler I have and have my dad weld hangers on the muffler. That would be like $140. And I would have the piece of mind that I did it, and people aren't revving the shit out of my car when I would leave it there.

I dunno if that would do any good for an n/a Neon, not to mention you would save a lot of money sticking with the stock size.

2.5 is better for an n/a. I wouldn't go bigger then 2.5.

I found a cat off a stratus for free, so I'm going to replace my downpipe with this cat for now until later.

I need money to buy tires for my quad.

According to some posts on neons.org 3.0 isn't overkill for a mild n/a build. They said it was around 5hp increase of 2.5 in piping.

But I have no use for 3.0.

Meh, without dyno results to backup larger than 2.5 piping on a N/A build, they can post all day. A 3" daimeter tube 10' long, is a lot of air to push out of the way.

A 2.5" cut out at the down pipe would prolly make more power than 2.5" or 3" pipe out the back. Like I've said before, you can start out large, then gradually neck down to the end. The gases cool as they travel, slowing down. If the pipe gets smaller, it helps keep them flowing, instead of having to be pushed out the pipe. It's all about velocity, not size.
