engine trouble, figured it out

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

engine trouble, figured it out

Post by Haganracing » Thu May 27, 2010 4:26 pm

Ok guys.. I am getting annoyed at my car now..

My car has been running great ever since i did the cam, headers, intake manifold.

Well today I stopped at a light and I always put my car in neutral at the light just because thats what I do.. Well when i did that, my car surged a little past 2000rpm and for about 4-6 seconds and then went down and idled at 1300rpm and sounded like a real cam.. But this shouldn't be happening..

Anyone have any clue one what this could possibly be?

Also when im driving and giving it gas, its fine.. But when I take my foot off the gas (lets say at 3k) it takes a few seconds till the rpm goes back down to where it would be if I had let off the gas right away.

:banghead:

EDIT: Figured it out.. Intake manifold hose to the throttlebody.

Vac leak? TPS messing up? VSS working correctly?

I checked for vacuum leaks and it all seemed fine.

Maybe the TPS is messing up, but when I have it in drive at a stoplight it seems fine..

Possibly the "transmission range sensor" switch is bad. IIRC the ATX's have a sensor that tells the pcm when it is in gear, so it can adjust the idle speed to keep it from stalling. If it thinks it's in gear, it will keep the idle high. The neutral position might not be breaking contact completely.

Hmm

I have also noticed when I turn the car on.. It starts and then engine RPM goes down real low and will shut off if I don't give it gas to keep the rpms up at first.

That started happening a few days before this "issue". Maybe that has something tied to it..

Mine did that when the map sensor was dirty.

I would suggest taking both sensors off the tb and cleaning them, and taking the map sensor out and cleaning it.

Also wouldn't the VSS do that if it's messing up and thinking it's not coming to a stop?

Not sure how you would clean the TPS. The IAC, yes, clean, and spray lube it.

If the VSS was showing movement, the speedometer, and odometer would be also showing movement. I think by the nature of the VSS, it would be nearly impossible to fail that way.

I could see this being IAC related. Give her a good cleaning.

I am going to clean her up see what happens.

:crossfinger:

Edit:

I cleaned out the tps (i guess, the one ontop of the TB) and it was dirty.. Didn't work though..

the iac gasket is kinda crappy as well. Be sure to add some gasket maker on that when you put it back in, or they tend to leak.

Yeah, it was pretty dry. I didn't mess with it LOL

The rubber bellows tube has a cut in it.. Causing the vacuum leak.. So atleast that problem is solved.

Thanks for all your help guys!

The earlier gaskets are formed o rings. They are fairly fail proof. Then they cheaped out.
