If you couldn't tell, I think the Haynes is junk. Get a real manual.

Couldn't agree more, FSM FTW!

Loosen the bolt/nut that secure the alternator ears to the engine bracket. Then use the nut on the threaded rod to loosen or tighten the belt. Done and done.

There are two bolts on the alternator bracket when you look behind it, The one on the left side of the bracket, locks the alternator in place, the bolt facing the firewall adjusts the tension on the belt.. loosen it and then pull the alternator towards the motor, voila belt comes off. you'll need a 13mm and 15mm wrench, or socket if you can fit one in there.
