Putter followed by puff of white smoke while in Reverse

I'm totally over my head with the onslaught of issues with my car lately...

Sometimes when I first start my car after it cools off and put it in reverse, the engine starts to choke up and putter real bad until I put it in neutral then it revs up by itself and goes back to normal which is then followed by a puff of white smoke out of the exhaust.

Any idea's?

i might be wrong but typically white smoke out of the exhaust means that your engine is burning coolant. which means that your head gasket might be blown.

If that were the case it would be doing it more often than not, wouldn't it?. Strange its only doing it in reverse though, beats me

i know the reverse thing threw me off too, probably just wait til OD gets back online.

Yeah, that's what mostly everyone who reads "white smoke" says online but this is the only time I see smoke, and it's only a puff, not a big cloud and it only happens once and awhile, not every cold start and only when the gear is in reverse. Weird huh?

Oh yeah, and I replaced the PVC a couple years ago but I'll prob replace it again for the hell of it since it's soo cheap.
