Burning smell

Today, after driving to and from my girlfriends house over an hour away, I noticed a burning smell coming from my exhaust that smelled like burning rubber.

When I got home, I popped the hood and could smell it in the engine bay as well. There was also some smoke that seemed to be coming from behind the engine.

I also noticed some oil on the back side of the transmission and I think there was some on the cross bar under the car as well.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them? Does any one know what it could be or how to fix it?

Not yet, I was going to check it out tomorrow during the day when I have more light.

I would recommend cleaning the suspected areas first, then run around a bit to see if there is a leak. It's almost impossible to see a leak on a dirty engine!

Sure it isn't the valve cover? Or is it coolant?

Could also be the cam sensor seal. Or the oil pressure sending unit.

I took it to the dealership (FlameSuitOn!). They showed me where it was leaking on the back of the engine. I get my car back tomorrow, with new seals, gaskets and water pump.

BTW, the Hyundai Accent is probably one of the worst cars ever made. God I hate my rental car.

If they changed the water pump, it prolly wasn't as cheap as he would have liked. But running, without worrying if it will puke on you is worth it most of the time. I hope they put a timing belt in there while they had it torn down that far.

They didn't mention anything about changing the timing belt, only that they had to take it off. I'll ask them about it when I go to pick up the car.
