no it won't, the engine will still hit operating temps like it should....

Most PCMs have you out of warmup enrichment by 150-160 degrees. 180 won't be a problem.

on a non modded car 180 T-stat may cause your engine to use more gas. I did this few years back and I started getting crappy gas mileage, switched back and the gas mileage improved. I would get a stock t-stat and a coolant power flush.

how crappy would the milage be?

I saw like 2-3 mpg and some fouling on the spark plugs. I would definitely try the flush first with a stock t-stat

then I would check for HG leak. When you get the flush see if there is oil in the Coolant. When you first posted i thought HG problem.

I think I would replace the radiator cap before thinking head gasket. After the car is turned off the cap might be leaking down pressure into the coolant reservoir the loss of pressure causes the coolant in the engine to boil creating a ton of heat soak. The most common sign of this is hearing coolant boil in the reservoir with the engine off but this is not always the case. I think you need a radiator cap. The bg cleaner flush is amazing we do that in our shop. the only way to get any more rust and coolant sludge out is removing the core plugs.

You would be losing coolant if it was the HG. If there are no sounds of boiling at shut down, I really wouldn't worry too much. If it isn't getting hot enough to boil over with the proper psi cap, then it isn't getting hot enough to damage too much. To put it in perspective, 240ºF won't even bake a cake.

You could try flushing the coolant, as the acidity might be high enough to make enough voltage at that temp to throw the gauge off. Also you could add Water Wetter after flushing to help with the heat transfer.

Edit: You could also try putting a mechanical gauge in, to see what it actually is doing. Even if it is just a temporary thing.

it boiled once last year that was after 1 hr drive in 105 temps

plus i do notice that the reserve tank is almost empty after a week or 2

If it is leaking slowly, there should be an odor as it steams away. Could be going directly into the combustion chamber, and out the exhaust, but until it gets bad enough, it may not smoke or smell like coolant in the exhaust.

It can also be going out the weep hole in the water pump. Mine was doing this at 100,000ish miles. Wasn't enough to leave a puddle, but you could see where it was seeping when I changed the timing belt, etc. at 112,000.

yeah theres a smell of coolant in the ac system none yet in exhaust



the guy at the shop where im getting the flush done just showed me some coolant leakage in the back of the engine wants $40 for a pressure check....should i allow it?

but it is not near the water pump more toward the driver side nearing the tranny

Sounds like a hg then. A pressure test would confirm, I would think.

I would see if AZ has a pressure tester you could rent. Or for $40, you could prolly buy one.

ok done well it still heats up a lil bit but during operation gone is the coolant smell.......i think its done
