5W30, 10W30...not really going to make too big a difference in a N/A Neon engine IMO. 10W30 will be fine.

personally i would go with a thicker oil. i am getting a valve train noise too. and will be going with 10w40 and a bottle of lucas oil additive when i do my oil change just to see if that lessens my noise. if not its not a head problem and it will be time to do a motor swap for me.

A motor swap to try and get rid of "the Neon tick?" That's the first time I've heard of someone going that far...

Worn guides will make it noisy(er). Heavier oil will do nothing for that. After new exhaust guides were installed in mine, it was like a new engine, as far as noise. Then you hear all the other weird crap.

Timing belt slap, worn idlers, etc. can be part of the noise also. Replace your tensioner with the '04 style when the timing belt is replaced doing the head.

don't all over-head cam engines make the same noise at some level? our injectors are loud as hell too.
