Foam air filter?

I know HKS makes filters made of foam but i heard from many ppl with boosted cars that they fall apart and get sucked into the turbo after some time... hence why i stayed away from em

They generally don't filter as well, from what I've read about them in the past. I doubt that they have gotten too much better.

They work great on Briggs & Stratton engines tho. But even the newer ones have gone to a pleated paper filter, that cost 5 times more than a car filter that is 5 times bigger.

foam air filter

Post by g_force58 » Mon Sep 27, 2010 12:23 am

I wouldn't run a foam filter on ym car. I have seen them come apart and deteriorate over time. I don't like the idea of anything being sucked into my engine other than clean cool air. I'll stick to my K&N. With the higher underhood temps of a boosted car I think the foam would go south rather quickly. OD, boy howdy on the price of pleated lawn mower filters. $20 bucks for a filter on mine! When I changed it, I went looking for the gold lining in it.

Yeah, I seen the prices on them hunting down a fuel cap. I was thinking to myself if I owned one of those, for that $, a washable filter would be on the list. Even if I had to go all ghetto on it, I wouldn't pay that much for a 3 x 5 paper filter.

High end oiled foam filters, like the ones that HKS makes, are actually better at filtering small media than a K&N pleated style filter. Whether they flow better is a different story.
