Hi Guys
I have a slight problem I dont know what this is? Its under the PCV valve and I think it may be the cam position sensor? am I right? If not what is it...
As you can see from the pics there is a dry oily patch all over it...its been like that for a while and it hasn't given me a problem...no codes....

is it normal to look like this? and if not would a simple replacement fix it? I need info guys...thanx heaps

Is it normal for it to have sludge like that around it? Will replacing it fix it ie does it have a gasket or something?

Pretty much normal. They almost never seal up 100% I have seen a few bone dry, but they usually seep some oil one way or another. I ended up using silicone to stop the worst of it, but it still looks just like that. At least it doesn't oil my bell housing anymore. I think it is seeping through the connector. Being it is the thrust bearing for the cam too, it might develop some hair line cracks, and seep oil.

You can, but a new one may do the same after a while. If nothing else, keep the original in the trunk for a back up. I haven't heard much lately, but for a while there were a lot of newer ones crapping out prematurely. Mine has 160,000 miles (257495 km) plus on it. I am considering a new one, just for safety's sake of the thrust surface getting too worn.

Are they a simple install? out with the old in with the new? is there any special notes i need to know?
and do they come with the oil seal gasket? Our Dollar is so good at the moment parts from the state are CHEAP for me so I might as well replace anything that looks dodgy

I believe the oem one might come with a new seal. I can't recall. They are pretty cheap, compared to the sensor, so even if it doesn't it is just a little more $. Mine still leaked after I bought a new seal, that is why I siliconed it. There is a groove that the seal fits into. it has little nubs all the way around. just push it into the groove, and make sure it is fully seated, so it doesn't pop out and get damaged installing the sensor.

On mine, I cleaned it and the mating surface with carb cleaner, put RTV silicone in the groove, and put the seal into the groove, then installed. You don't want any excess oozing out into the cam magnet area either, so once the seal is in the groove, wipe away the excess.

I would only recommend that if it will not seal.

I replaced mine (for electrical reasons) about two years ago, and it hasn't leaked a bit. The OEM one didn't leak before either. Got lucky so far I guess. But yeah, silicone would be a good idea.
