New cat and throwing P0038

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

New cat and throwing P0038

Post by Johny » Mon Oct 25, 2010 9:38 pm

Hey guys, I've read up that the P0038 code reads as "Heater Circuit High Voltage" and probably means that the O2 sensor is bad - might have shorted or something like that.

My question is, before I got the new cat and flex pipe in, I was not getting any engine lights or error codes so why is it showing now. On a side note, my dads OBD2 scan tool isn't picking up any faults, anyone know why not? :tardbang:

(PS: my old down pipe didnt have a flex in there, but the new one does - could this make a difference?)

Thanks in advance guys

The o2 sensor might have been borderline fail, and the trauma of swapping it into the new pipe might have killed it. Or the wires got yanked/damaged in some way. As long as the flex (I'm assuming in the mid pipe, after the cat) does not let the mid pipe sag, it will be fine.

Yeah that's what I suspected. Thanks a lot bro :)

Edit: Turns out it the mechanic that put in the new pipe, broke the clip so the wire wasn't fully inserted.
