Exhaust advice

Post by SC62391 » Thu Dec 02, 2010 8:10 pm

I am doing full exhaust on my 2001 R/T instead of getting coils because my mistake fart can is embarrassing and the system is pretty rusty.

I want it to sound nice and deep with no rasp, loud, but not too loud.

I just got the Pacesetter Ceramic Coated Headers off of MP and plan on getting the Thermal R&D rear section. I just wondered how loud it would be if i went catless with a res/glass pack muffler. Or if i went without a resonator and went with a high flow cat. Or if i should just get both.

This is what i was looking at.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-54955/

Any advice is greatly appreciated! :D

You fucked up your URL tags royally... you never closed them, then just did one at the end. that's why the message didn't display.

Just get the Thermal R&D if you can find one somewhere... they don't make them anymore. I had one on my car and loved it. My 03 atx has 2.5" exhaust with 2 Moroso spiralflow mufflers in the midpipe and a Dynomax camaro dual outlet muffler and it's fairly loud, but not annoying.

My 05 mtx has stock 2.25" exhaust with a Dynomax camaro dual outlet muffler and it's a bit quieter due to smaller piping I guess.

If I could do it over again, I'd stick with the Thermal but it didn't fit my SRT rear bumper. They sound awesome though.

So what did your exhaust look like with the thermal?
It wont be too loud if i run straight to to the muffler?

$367 shipped.... Glad I bought a Camaro muffler, Trubendz stainless tubing and had an Exhaust shop install it all for about that much.

I asked the guy if the part in the picture was the part for sale and he said it wasn't. I can't find thermal r&d anywhere. Anyone know where to get it? Or have it for sale?

Bill, I spent WAY more than that on my current setup and it still doesn't sound as good as my exhaust sounded with just the Thermal R&D rear section.

I sold mine, A guy just sold a brand new one on here a while back to Canada. They're no longer in production. And their whole ad is BS then... it says Thermal R&D Neon R/T which is exactly what's shown in the picture.

Here is a pic of mine before I put it on the car... it's upside down obviously

Yeah, i knew they went out of businees and i saw that one that went to Canada like 20 days too late.

Do you know if Howell Automotive actually still has some? Or if they are reliable?

I think the problem with Howell is more the PCM issues, than their other products. I have bought stuff from them in the past and haven't had any troubles. I just wouldn't buy an AF/X PCM from them.

And I'm too much of a tight ass to spend $300 on any muffler.

For $300 and up, it better bake me some cookies, and make me a sammich.

not familiar with the r&d mufflers, but here's my setup, relatively cheap, looks good and sounds great!
stock header, stock cat, all i did was remove the muffler, bolt on the SRT4 rear axle back section, and in the straight section of the exhaust i had a cherrybomb 31" glasspack installed, costed me about 40 for the glasspack and 40 for install if i remember correctly, the rear section from the SRT4 cost me about 125 or so on ebay, and i installed it myself, so for around 200 bucks or so, its quiet when u want it to be, and loud enough for me, no rasp at all.

Yeah i at first i didn't care what i spent. But now i know i will feel like shit if i spen 500 on it. So i think i'm going to go a little cheaper. And yours sounds exactly like what 'm looking for. Do you have any videos of it?

And is yours 3"?

Trust me... I think it's gonna be too loud for what you want... I had the SRT rear section with 2 Moroso Spiralflow mufflers in the midpipe and it was ungodly loud under load. aka any time you were on the gas.

I'd go with a TruBendz piping kit if you can still get it and mount up either a Dynomax Super Turbo camaro muffler, or a Magnaflow camaro muffler. I have the Super Turbo.

3" piping is WAY too big for a stock neon. I have 2.5" piping and it makes the exhaust louder, but you lose low end torque.

do some searching, there's some good threads. this one has a lot of pics of different setups

i have no videos or soundclips, i dont think its too loud when you get on it, but then again i drove for over a year with no glasspack, but still ive heard much louder, all my piping is 2.25 Fyi.

like I said mine didn't have a glasspack, I had two spiralflows and my car is ATX so it was ungodly loud. I didn't like the sound on Dan's car nor Matt's. Just keep in mind if you go that route and don't use a real muffler... it's gonna be loud.

yeah i cut my muffler off and drove around like that for about 2 weeks. It sounded good until 3k. Then it sounded like raspy ass.

I found this for about the same price
