major oil leak

Post by usmctd » Tue Dec 28, 2010 8:09 pm

Hey guys and and a few gals. I new to the org and I got a question :tardbang: . I hav an 04 sxt with a big oil leak I cant seem to find :banghead: .
It is leaking externally can only be seen from underneath. I have replaced the oil pan gasket but with no sucess. I'm losing 3qrts between oil change. Leak does seem to be in lower motor area, not head gasket, hopefully. Is there a lot of this problem out there and what seems to be the common fix?

Does the oil pressure light come on? The sensor can come loose and you will lose oil through that hole.

Do check the oil pressure sensor. Is the oil filter correctly tightened? The "gasket" on the oil drain plug is still good?

The other one that seems to come from the rear, is the cam position sensor (CPS) the o ring tends to leak, and it flows around the bell housing area to the back of the engine. A new ring may fix it, if not, clean the sensor/mating surface with brake clean, and use a little silicone RTV in the o ring groove before re inserting it. You just need enough to just push out with the ring.

And do not crank the engine without the sensor in place. It is what holds the cam in alignment.

drain plug seals no problem, there are no visible leaks from the top of motor i.e. cam sens, valve cover, cam seal. Its not a little leak. oil filter is fine as well. Anyone know about oil pumps leaking? I have to clean the oil off when I get home fill it back up and then let it sit till morning and start looking again.

If the leak is coming from your oil pump area, it would probably be from the crank seal behind hit (given you've never removed the pump).

Next time you're under it, feel up the sides of the block and see how far up the oil moisture goes. It could be leaking from your cam sensor oring or headgasket too.

Also the cam seal at the gear end. That runs down by the oil pump. You won't see that, unless you pull the timing cover.

I will have to check behind the timing cover this weekend. I'm also trying to play this up a little more to try and get a top end rebuild kit

ok. so got under the car and its actually pretty dry compared to what it was before the pan gasket.oil sens is dry as can be. i did find some oil near the pump and filter corner traced it back up the motor and it actually is the valve cover gasket.silly me! after talking with the wife i find its been more than 3000 miles since oil change so it really is a small leak and a 15 dollar repair. no top end rebuild after all. Thanks for all the pointers you guys are way cooler then neons.org guys they actually made me mad enough to sell my r/t.

Check in your spark plug tubes... if there is oil around the spark plug then this would be a good opportunity to remove the valve cover, re-seat the plug tubes and replace the gaskets.
