calling all neon gurus

Post by Da Reaper » Sat Apr 02, 2011 9:16 pm

on the way home from picking up some parts my car starts to overheat. I know it wasnt the thermostat cause I just changed it no less than 4 hrs ago. So I pull over and it goes down. Upon getting home the car starts to smoke (thank goodness i was home) I park and open the hood fluid was everywhere but mostly where the upper radiator hose is at. Now the car wont start at all. Any clues in what the hell is going on?? I didnt hear no bubbling of coolant or water pump grinding. In dire need of help asap...thanks in advance. :cussing: :cussing:

Wow dude... Damn, this really sucks. That's why I drove the Jeep all the way out there instead of my Neon, no need to beat it up for no reason.

Glad you made it home, but I hope the car recovers well. I have no clue what it could be. Ask Dante.

Thanks UriahRR..one crazy day. Guess I will be rebuilding most of the car now. The only other car is a IS-F and it wasnt fitting a bumper. Besides my girl had it anyway.

Did you check for codes?

So it is spinning (cranking) but not firing?

Hopefully the water pump did not seize.

@OD yes its spinning, just came from checking it. Also only codes I got was 1680 and 117. From the looks of the fluid explosion and some unknown goo on the radiator..looks like the radiator cracked somewhere near the top right below where the upper hose connection right above the fins. So it looks like Im going to have to do a full replacement job (radiator, hoses, water pump belts) Funny thing though, checked thermostat and it wasnt damaged..go figure. Since this is going to be my first DIY replacement job, anybody know any good sites to get parts? Thanks to all.

Well at least there isn't a CPS code. Not sure why it isn't firing, unless the plug wires got soaked enough to ground out.

:-k

Do you have a helper that can crank it, while you look into the inspection hole at the cam gear? To verify it is turning?

That wouldn't mean it is still in time tho. The overheat thing, other than trapped air, is what has me wondering about the WP possibly damaging the timing belt.

I am thinking that one of your wiring harness / sensor plugs got soaked. :withstupid:

that might be the problem Nickko. I am thinking of replacing everything. Anybody know how to fix the 117 code? Going to order a new radiator and gates hoses and belts, water pump and timing belt. I know I can do the radiator, dont know about the rest. Anything else that yall suggest I should also replace??

P0117 Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Circuit Low Voltage

Hopefully, just replace the coolant sensor in the head. Near the heater tubes.

I'm guessing the ATF cooler lines, since he said attached to the radiator bottom.

I think the dealer is the only place you can get the pre formed ones. Bulk ATF line will do, as long as they don't have the metal tubing crimped onto them as well.
