Okay, so I've added the Mopar CAI and I'm planning the first "long" drive (Dayton, OH meet on Saturday) since the install. Rain is forecast for Saturday evening. Ever since I read about Manny hydrolocking his engine, there has been a fear in the back of my mind about having this happen, especially now that my car is no longer stock. Is there a reason I should be concerned? Have I turned my car into a dry-weather-only car? Egads, if that is true, I will really freak about having the car at Carlisle and so far from home.

And should I be concerned about high-pressure car wash wands in the area of the CAI? I usually use wands to remove bugs from the front of the car and to remove gook around the inner fenders.

Hopefully, I've just gotten myself worked up over nothing, as usual.

I too had this problem gramps, but I seem to have gotten over it. Basically, avoid huge puddles if you can, or put a splash guard underneath it if you're really concerned. I actually drove through a couple of huge puddles by accident, but it didn't really seem to do much. I mean I let go of the throttle of course for a couple seconds, but other than that I didn't see any signs of water when I cleaned out my TB and CAI.

I am also a huge whore when it comes to washing the car, and I've never hit a problem with that either.

All in all, just don't take the car swimming, and you should be fine. Those are my 2 cents, let's see what others have to say

Ha-ha, that's where I'll be stopping to and from Carlisle.

Don't go through water over the bottom of your bumper and you'll be fine.

You're at stock height and have a splash shield.. don't drive through a lake and you will be fine. The thought of hydrolocking any time you see water will probably always be on your mind but you'll deal with it better over time

I've driven through rain many many times, and I've only seen one CAI since I've been into cars even get close to having and issue and my friend was literally slowly going through a 1 foot puddle in a parking lot... The only way you ever have a problem is if you drive through standing water.... which if you're doing that you do need to learn your lesson.

But I haven't have a problem in 6 years never moving my CAI for rain etc..

Yeah, I lost my first car due to driving through standing water so maybe that's where the fear originated. I just don't want to be on edge when I see rain forecasted when I have to drive somewhere.

If you have the splash guard that's an extra added protection. As long as you aren't going puddle stomping you'll be fine. I had a CAI on my Stratus R/T coupe and a CAI on my Miata, the SRT was the first one I was weary of and due to that I had three different SRIs. I just changed over to an AGP CAI so I had the same fears you did until I realized I don't drive my car in the rain .

Gramps- you should be fine. you got your fender liner and even a bottom covering the filter. no need to worry.

just avoid puddles sometimes i get a little scared and press the clutch in and go through i wouldnt worry my filter site 6 inches from the ground and ive had no issues my 05 was the AEM setup sat right where the foglights sit went through some bad puddles in big storms nothing happened

Harold's filter stuck completely out under the bottom of the car and was slammed the filter was no more than 3" off the ground I never had a problem just be careful and if you get to water crawl through with the clutch in. The only way to hydrolock is to suck water up the filter being damp isnt really an issue

Really though, like others said above, just avoid standing water. Small puddles won't hurt anything, it's submerging the filter and intake inlet that will get you into trouble. Regarding the pressure wash, have at it. Hydrolock is only an issue when the engine is running. It won't suck water in if it's parked being washed. And in case you ask, residual water from a wash is nowhere near enough to remain in the intake and cause damage.

You'll be fine gramps. I did hydrolock my NYG but I was running an iceman intake and the water was up over my boots when I got out if the car.

Wow, pretty high water there. I figure that if there are ducks and geese swimming in the roadway, it would probably be best not to test the CAI.

I have an AEM cai on mine and i was driving from my parents in west virginia to base in Ft Cambell and was driving through the rains that made nashville flood last year. I had no problems, and was actually going faster than emergency vehicles. I didnt baby it, and going faster than emergency vehicles was 40mph if that tells you the rain conditions. Just dont go into water deep enough to make it a suction effect and you will be ok.

Great! Thanks again, everyone. While modding is old hat to most on this site, it is new to me and I always tend to worry about changing things. Tonight will the first test as the forecast is calling for possilble showers on my drive home from Dayton. Considering how many hours I spent on Friday detailing the car, I've probably jinxed it to rain on my clean car.

Success! Car drove through rain like a champ. I feel pretty stupid now.
