1997 Dodge Neon DOHC problem

Post by Anatoly » Sun May 08, 2011 8:17 pm

So, yesterday I replaced the thermostat and spark plugs on my gfs 97 neon. Today, we got another problem, car won't stay running. It starts, but then dies within seconds and you get some kind of fuel like smell. What's weird, sometimes when it sits for 10-15 min. it starts and acts normal. I'm thinking fuel pump?

update:
Now the car cranks but doesn't start.

Can you hear the fuel pump run when keyed on? Have you checked the fuse? Have you checked for spark?

It is possible the FP was/is dying, and is drawing enough amps to blow the fuse. It may have run long enough so it ran for a few minutes then seized/slowed enough to cut fuel flow. But IDK if you would get the flooded (fuel) smell.

Is the oil filter under the car? Is it possible to get to it from the top?
