2000 SOHC issue

Post by elwood » Sat May 14, 2011 11:57 pm

Hello, I found oil by my plugs, so I relaced the vavle cover and the seals around the holes for the plugs. The thing that has my confused is, the plug wires slide into the metal tube. The tube was sicking up on #2, 3, and 4 cylinder, I took a hammer and lightly tapped them back down but what in the world would casue them to come out like that. #1 was good, 2 was up a little, 3 a little farther and 4 even farther. I drove the car 500 miles today and it looks like it's all holding up ok I've just never heard of that happening before. Thanks in advance for the help.

They're just hollow tubes that sit inside the head. Eventually, especially if you just replaced the seals, they're going to move around some; pretty common. Just tap them back down to re-seat them and they should be good to go for some time.

Thanks, I've never heard of it happening before and wanted to make sure it was ok to just tap them down

Yes, it's fairly common and tapping them back town is exactly what to do. However if you find that they are coming back out pretty quickly again after you tap them back, you'll want to buy new ones. Pull the old ones out with pliers and you'll see the bottom edge is pretty smooshed.

The new ones will have a nice clean bottom edge that will crush a little when you install them...and that's what keeps them seated.

Press fit, and the FSM recommends cleaning the oil out of the bores, and using red loctite to install them.

Ya... what Bill said.

I had to have that done with mine as I had one that would constantly rise up and need to be put back in place.
