Hi,

I just picked up a 2001 Neon R/T and I just saw the code P1289. I've read that the code is a Manifold Tune Valve Solenoid Circuit. I am not too sure what this means so thats why I'm asking. How would you go about fixing it?

I have also noticed that the car is hard to start (takes a few cranks and then will run for a few seconds then cut out) and I think it has something to do with this code but I am not too sure.

I am new to the 2nd gen neon scene (this being my first) so I don't know that much about them. I do know that it has comfy seats though

Thanks for any help,

Jason

It has nothing to do with hard starting. It has no effect on anything but the MTV. And a bit of associated performance.

Check the relay in the underhood fuse/relay box. (PDC, for Power Distribution Center) Possibly it is bad, or missing.

The other problem may be the harness has been replaced with a non R/T bay harness. In that case, you will always have the code. To check the PDC, the relay socket should have the slides in the holes for the relay pins. If there are empty holes, you are stuck with the code, or trying to find an R/T engine bay harness. Only an '01/'02 R/T harness will work.

To get the butterflies to operate, you would need to check the how to for wiring the Magnum IM. It would be a bummer tho to have an R/T and have to go to the trouble.

As for it being hard to start/remain running, The IAC may need cleaned, or worst case replaced. ($100 ish) You could pull it off the top of the TB and leave it plugged in. Key on, and see if it goes wide open. If it doesn't move, it is either stuck, or shot. Or you could hold the pedal down a small amount to see if it starts easier. Tho this skews things a bit, as the TPS voltage is higher than the idle value.

Thanks I will check that.

I also read that IAC could be bad but I wasn't sure if the intake had anything to do with hard starting. So i guess since i will be under the hood, i will check/fix that too.
