2001 SOHC head on a 2004

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

2001 SOHC head on a 2004

Post by bcboy4ca » Wed Dec 14, 2011 12:06 pm

I either have a bent or burnt exhaust valve on my 2004 Neon 2.0L. For simplicity sake and least amount of down time I was thinking of grabbing a used head from my local pick-a-part. All they have available are 2001 cars. Will this head bolt right on to my 2004?

You will need the EGR block off, but the '01 head should have it already. Just in case someone snagged it.

Probably shouldn't listen to anything your penis says, that guy's a dick.

I put a 98 head onto a 2003, worked great. Make sure to use the cam magnet from the '04, it's gotta different pattern. You can use the whole cam but need to use at least the magnet.

Good point. I forgot about that. Since you are swapping magnets at a minimum, be sure to get a new CPS seal.

Since you are swapping heads, replace all the gaskets/seals. They should come with a headgasket set. Mine did.

Yeah, it depends on how far you want to jump into it. If you go the HG set route, may as well have the valve seals installed while the head is off the car also. This may cost a bit more if you can't remove the springs yourself, but for an '01 head, they are prolly about shot anyways.

If it was a new(er) assy, you could get away with just a HG and the cam seals. Rock Auto.com has some fairly good prices on the gaskets/cam seals, tho the cam seals are pretty cheap from the dealer. I think RA was about the cheapest for valve seals, tho the Felpro set I got from them was short one seal.

It was a Felpro error, as the box and bag were both still sealed. I just bought one from at the dealer to replace it. Wasn't worth the hassle of returning/waiting for another from RA.

Some early 2000,s had it. The EGR port in the head was left partially into 2002. All the plastic IM's have the casting boss.

Hell, they even had the port on the early R/T heads. Why? Who knows, as the Magnum IM has no provision for it. I could see it if it was the same casting as the standard head, but the exhaust ports, and shape of the exhaust side are totally different.
