05 SXT sounds like diesel engine when excelerate

I just finished doing the booger bushing and jmb bushings. Shifter is really tight now. My SXT has 96k on it and no signs of over heating or anything. I am in Socal. When I excelerate the engine sounds like a diesel engine. Sounds like valves clicking. I am thinking maybe an oil chnage and transmission fluid check? I have plugs I haven't put in yet. I bought car a couple months ago and haven't had the "tune up " yet. This just sounded weird. Anyone have a diesel Neon :dunno:

Sounds like your knock sensor has died, or has come unplugged. It is below the IM, about center of the block. It may be easier accessed from below.

You can really appreciate the oem spark curve, when there is nothing holding it back. I recommend checking/replacing it ASAP, or you may develop compression loss through the center of your pistons.

If the tank is near empty, I would put some 93 Octane in there, or some E85 to reduce/eliminate the spark knock until you get it fixed. When mine had come unplugged, I did not realize it until I had used some 87 octane. It definitely will let you know at the crack of the throttle.

Heck, at your age, you should recognize that sound from the late 70's Lean Burn ECU's  (Tho I have to admit, a non functioning knock sensor makes much louder spark knock than that)

Thanks I thought it might have something to do with spark knock. Anyone have pics of location? I am trying to find the website that has diagrams. I may just pick up a chilton this weekend.

If you look right below the elbow for the heater tube, it is that black connector. Kind of looks like a bolt head. but it is just the light in that pic. IDK if the FSM shows a drawing, I can look later.

I see, thanks man. What would tip me off that it's not working other than the knocking sound? If I pull it out what will I be looking for? also where can I get a new one? O'reilly's , pep boys, autozone etc?

Oh, love the powder coating, I am hoping to pc mine ps2 silver

Really not going to be any signs of the sensor being bad, other than the spark knock.

It just screws into the block, and I'm guessing it is a blind hole, so it won't be in contact with oil, etc. I know on the non NGC, there is no code, so there is no CEL. I don't think there is even a way to really test it, if there is, it isn't something that comes up in too many discussions.

NGC has these codes listed, but how many of them apply to the neon specifically, IDK. (There are also bank 2 codes, obviously those don't apply)

P0324 Knock Sensor (KS) Module Performance
P0325 PCM Knock Sensor Circuit
P0326 Knock Sensor CKT Excessive Spark Retard
P0327 Knock Sensor Circuit Low Voltage
P0328 Knock Sensor 1 Circuit High Input (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)
P0329 Knock Sensor 1 Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)

Courtesy of Mancini Racing. These were sold already done. They haven't offered them for a few years now.

I only got it, because it was a clearance item, And being a noobie at the time, I wasn't sure if I would break the plastic one getting the tube seals out. So it was a cheap back up/good excuse to "upgrade".

Edit:

Any of those places should have it.

Mopar PN is 4557667 all years. $91.70

I would source it from the above mentioned places, for the cost difference. (About $60ish less)
