Check Engine light On then went off...?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Check Engine light On then went off...?

Post by gcretro » Tue May 29, 2012 8:57 pm

2004 Neon SE. ~112k Miles. (Cluster is a 00 Neon tach cluster)

When driving back from work (a 15 mile drive on interstate), the check engine light came ON when I accelerated from 70 to about 80mph for passing another vehicle.

Drove home, stopped for about 25 minutes. I tried the Key ON, OFF; ON, Off; ON... nothing showed up on the Odometer?

So then drove to autozone to pull codes. Light was still ON. The auto zone guy checked for codes but said couldn't find any. He did seem to struggle a bit... Then I started it and the check engine light was off. (I highly doubt if he reset it accidentally).

Any thoughts?

He could have accidentally cleared the code, depending on the scanner. Usually they show the codes, then you have to clear them.

Try just starting it, shift through the gears (if ATX), put back in park, and shut off. Then key on three times within 5 seconds. If it just says "done", then don't worry about it, until it happens again.

If you are not getting the "done" display, then you aren't holding your tongue right, or something is messed up with the diagnostics.

Too much time spent here is a sign of a bad case of Ownaneonvirus.
