WHAT IS THIS SOUND? please.(Another Video!)

Started it up this morning and this came about. check oil, was low..filled it...even did oil treatment and is the same or little bit quieter. very little. but everytime i start it up its loud as hell.

-My clutch is bad, getting it replaced
-and i think i have close to clogged cat, soon to be replaced.
-also running the evap codes 0456 and 0441...

With this knowledge, what could it be?
Only thing i can think is maybe skipped a tooth or one of the lifters is just fucked. -but im not a mechanic. lol

IDK, it sounds like all the lifters. Just one would be a totally different noise.

Cam timing wouldn't do that. Does your oil light function? It should come on when you key on, go off once running. If the oil was just low, it shouldn't have affected it, unless it was 4 quarts low. Even then if the oil light went off.... And you didn't drive it across town, it shouldn't have done that.

Possibly there is something blocking oil flow to the head. Or some how all the lash adjusters trashed at once. If there is good flow to the head, then you may have to replace all the rockers.

If you keep running it with that much valve lash, it will eventually damage the cam lobes. Or possibly break a rocker. Because the cam is hitting the rocker higher up on the ramp, kind of like a ball bat hitting the ball at half bat, just not quite that extreme.

that sounds like a rod knock.... or even a timing belt slapping the timing cover.... how low of oil was it??? like two quarts? or like 1/2 quart....

i would not run it honestly rob... i am going to look at the video a few times again...

It thought it cycled a little fast to be a rod knock, but it's hard to tell. Might be easier to hear the rod knock from the bottom of the engine.

There was a similar post not too long ago and it was some part of the valvetrain, can't remember exactly what part.

It was one broken rocker/lash adjuster.

I took the valve cover off, found this little information. Is this the cause?

The head had tons of oil when i picked up the cover, just this seemed odd to me. Up and down i know is a problem, side to side?

Now you've got me wondering about the sound under my hood, sounds ALOT like the noise you made when you moved them back & forth. may have to take my VC off and check that out

Well I got new ones over night'd thanks to dave. Has helped me through this whole build, cant say thanks enough.

I will be doing the replacement tomorrow, ill be sure to take pics and more vids. I really hope this is the answer to it all.

i replaced my cylinder head last summer, it sounded exactly liek that for about an hour then it shut right up

The side to side play, you may be able to adjust out by loosening the shaft bolts and moving the spacers. I'm thinking you got air in the lash adjusters from being low on oil, and it hasn't worked it's way out, if the lash adjusters aren't already done.

You could try to submerge them in oil, and manually pump them by hand. I would do that with the ones you are getting anyways.

Be sure to put the rocker shafts on right side up, and check them for galling where the rockers ride.

If you get them upside down, you will be doing this all over again.

28 N.m/250 in.lbs

I just snug them down by feel. But understandably, some folks "feel" doesn't kick in until the threads come out with the bolt. :lol:

they aren't bad but they will spin around the shaft as you are moving them around. also before you put the valve cover back on i would pull the ASD relay from the fuse box in the engine compartment and crank the engine over until you see oil coming out of the top bleeder holes of the rocker arms.

Removing the spark plugs will make that easier on the starter/battery.

Ended up one of the bolts that holds the spacer down was stripped....retapping it, hopefully that will fix the problem. DBTP- "Dave by the phone" service is A+ by the way, lol. will keep you updated

Updated: Tapped in the thread, worked great. Put it all back together, makes the sound just a little bit less. I was scared starting it up thinking i fucked something up and i think now its time to bring it to a professional.
