new motor will not start

can you bend your valves just starting the notor out of time? it will not start but it turns over

Yes. If it out of time... don't turn it over. If you need to turn it over, use a big breaker bar on the crank. Don't force it to turn either if it is not easy.

Assuming you have the 2.0, yes if the valve timing is off, the valves can be bent. If it is more than two or three teeth off the valves are at risk. Maybe more or less, but either way, it isn't a good thing.
If it was cranking like the plugs were pulled, then likely the valves are bent.
If it is the 2.4, no, but it still may not run, depending on how far out the timing is.
