Cleaning magnum header?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Cleaning magnum header?

Post by FormerlyREDRT_98 » Wed Apr 17, 2013 9:57 am

I just got a magnum header in the mail yesterday, traded an SRT gauge cluster for it. The header has a lot of buildup and I want to clean it before installing. Anything I should or shouldn't use?

It is 400 series stainless. It will rust regardless, but just not horribly like mild steel.

If using a wire wheel, it will make the problem worse, if it is not stainless wire. The metal from the wires transfers, so if they are just steel wires, the surface will rust faster.

Bead blasting, and ceramic coating is the best bet, but you could get an OBX 300 series stainless for about the same cost, or less.

I would clean up the nasty welds so that they do not protrude into the exaust stream. Mine had boogers at the collector and on the ports. Makee sure your collector gasket is the right size. The local parts store "r/t" gasket was at least 1/4" too small... same PN for SRT, RT or SXT iirc.

Maybe I didn't specify enough. There's a lot of carbon buildup in the header and I'm looking to clean that out before installing. I'm not worried about the exterior, it looked to me

Just bring it by my house. I'm sure I have lots of stuff to clean it with. It's not like you are far away.

That, or for reference, soak it in a pail of Purple Power for a few days. It does a pretty decent job on heavy carbon.

If your engine is in good shape, it would probably just burn off anyways. The worry being if it would break up enough to go through the cat, if applicable.

Algonquin isn't too far. I was just up at my parents' house this past weekend in Crystal Lake.

Maybe I'll try the purple power. I have something called Super Clean (?) that I can try too

I'm actually looking to sell the header now, now that the Neon is "dead"
