so if I find out that I have power going to the relay ... or not to the relay, then what? i'm going to test it right now. at the fuse its reading 12v. I checked the spark plug while I was cranking it, and it was not a constant spark. on and off on and off. I thought that it should be more constant.

My car fails at starting!

Post by Sxteve » Wed May 01, 2013 7:47 pm

Here are the codes I've gotten:
P0700
P0562
(from a scanner)
P0522
(from key dance)
P0016
(late key dance) **** MOST Important***

How it happened.
- Drove 30 miles from when the fuel light came on.
- washed my car, pulled it in the garage and there was a check engine light.
- Restarted car, engine sputtered then I turned the ignition off.

Here is what I've done so far:
- Added 4 gallons of gas.
- Checked that the fuel was pumping to the rail - (it was)
- Checked the relays by switching fuses around and reading the fuse box with a voltage meter (all is well)
- Took the battery to be checked. (it was fine)
- Sprayed ether into the throttle body. (still didn't fire)
- Checked the spark plugs to ensure they were fireing properly. (they were giving an inconsistent spark) on/off/on/off
- Checked for good ground to the coil (all seemed well)
- Cleaned the oil pressure sending unit (per the 0522 code)
- Cleaned the battery terminals
- Replaced the Cam shaft sensor
- Cleaned the spark plugs (they were black)
- Checked the oil lvl =) it was fine.
- Replaced spark plugs

:banghead: --- PLEASE help!

Yeah, sorry if it offends you. I just thought it would be a little easier to read with all the things typed up in one thread. I'll just ask someone to delete it.

Have you tried totally unplugging the CPS? It may start if it is a CPS wiring issue, depending on where. It will take longer than "Normal" but might start.

The fact you even had spark means you have a cam/crank sync. If the PCM didn't get a signal from the crank, it would not ground the coils or injectors. It will default without a Cam signal to limp mode.

Were the plugs black and dry, or wet?

Does the fuel pump sound normal, or is it quieter than what you are used to hearing?

the spark plugs were wet and black. I replaced them and gapped them at 35. I'm checking compression and fuel pressure tonight. A thought I had is possibly the timing belt jumped time. Now I have to drive my wife's mustang to work BLah!

So it is getting fuel and spark, but possibly not enough of one or the other.

:-k

I'm wondering if it actually ran out of fuel, or just coincidentally something failed. At least the positive thing is it was at home, and you don't have a tow bill on top of this.

see if you can test the fuel pump with out removing it. My old car had easy access. Not sure on these.

If yorue not getting what you need to be delivered youre not goign to start.

maybe you ruined some injectors. test them and see.

what happened when you sprayed some starting fluid in the intake? did it sound liek it wanted to run? ive only used it on carb cars so no idea.

I agree, I doubt that the low fuel is related. I've drove farther on E before and nothing like this happened. Yeah, Bill.. it is nice it died in the garage lol. Guess I need to keep positive.

I listened to all the injectors and they all have a pulse. When I sprayed starting fluid in the intake, nothing different happened. The closest the car has been to firing up is when I had new plugs in it . And this morning when it had sat for while. She almost started up!

I want to thank everyone that is helping with this diagnosis, even though the car has not started yet I do appreciate all the help!

You didn't by chance mess with the ground near the driver side headlight did you?

i'm just gonna go out on a limb and throw out that, even though there isn't a code for it, the crank sensor is what tells the pcm when to ground out in order to fire the coil

After some more attempted cranking, unplugging the CPS, and noting not much difference, (It was trying really hard to start) re connected the CPS, got the expected P0340 code, and then also P0016. (Cam/Crank relationship)

Timing belt is overdue. But it does seem to have good compression from the sound when cranking, so he may just be very lucky.

It sounds like the timing is out when it does attempt to run, or a lot like it is running out of fuel, but you can actually smell the fuel.

Unless it is throwing codes just randomly, I'm putting most of my "bet" on the timing belt is beginning to slip.

Checked compression, its good. Checked fuel pressure, its good. I'm in the middle of changing the timing belt. it's shredded. Looks like it jumped about 2 teeth. I'll keep ya updated. Getting a gear puller tomorrow. I already bought a water pump so, yeah =(

At least I have a half tank of gas

That's what you call making full use of the timing belt.
