2.4 gurus - shortblock question

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

2.4 gurus - shortblock question

Post by jonnymopar » Mon May 22, 2006 9:12 am

I have in my posession a 2.4 shortblock completely assembled. Trouble is that it sat around and the bores are rusty... really, really rusty. I'm going to strip it down to the bare block and see if it's good enough to use, but I was thinking... if I took the crank out, could I drive the pistons down through the block instead of up through the top of the bores? This would make getting them out much easier than fighting against all the rust, and I'd minimize the chance of messing up the bores more.

I know some of you are probably saying punch it, but I got a GREAT deal on a set of stock SRT-4 pistons/rods and also a complete set of rings for it too. If I can't use this block, look for me in the WTB forum unless I find something locally, heh.

couldnt you run really light grit sand paper down? i mean, enough to remove some of the rust but not score the cylinder walls

You cant drive the pistons down, the cylinder bores(unless things changed) are tapered somewhat to prevent the pistons from coming out the bottom.
Spray the cylinder walls with some GOOD(not WD40) penetrating oil(PB blast ect..) and let the cylinders soak. Take some 800+ grit sand paper and try to scuff the walls up a little bit to smooth out the rust. When the pistons are coming out the only damamge should be done to the rings and not the piston if your carefull...

Sweet, I soaked them down with PB Blaster last week for the hell of it. Sounds like it was the right thing to do. I swear by that stuff.

I just finished retrofitting my puller with some M6x1.0 threaded rod to get my crank sprocket off. Wednesday or Thursday, I'll get a chance to pop the pistons out. I hope this block is salvagable.

GOD DAMMIT! It has a crack in an oil passage that I didn't even see until I had the pistons out. Crank looked fine.

Ah fuck it, it was too good to be true. Unless someone has a decent 2.4 block or knows someone who does, I'm off to the junkyard this week.
