Post by eastwoodsn352 » Sun Jun 11, 2006 3:10 pm

I have 13,xxx miles on my car so my factory stuff is still good and everyone ive talked to says i wont notice a difference. what do yall think? spend $50 for a coil and wires or just leave it alone?

heck if u can get BOTH for 50 i say go for it mang, youre saving like 100 bucks compared to ordering them like anyone else would have to do! you'll notice a minor diff in start up, idle, and throttle response from the wires, the coil, like everyone says, is prob not gonna make a diff.

what else are u looking to hear? stock coil should be good, but wont hurt to replace, and the wires will make the car feel a bit better. good deal for 50 bucks.

I dont think mpx has the screamin demon, isnt that a Howell exclusive? too lazy to check.. :)

hey BRR, those voltages confuse me. why would MSD make theirs run lower than stock? wouldnt that also imply that the SD is essentially the same as stock, and that the MSD is worse? im no electrician but thats what i take from what u wrote. :?

That is what I can find for voltages, I guess other things should be considered also..dwell time, coil resistance's etc....

At 13,000 miles, I personally don't see how plug wires are going to do anything. 50K, maybe smooth the idle, but 13K is barely broken in.
Fix it 'till it's broken. Then upgrade.

everything on the car should be broken in within a few hundred miles according to the manual. some people give the stock parts more credit than they deserve. sure they'd last, but how good would they work during that time? probably not at 100%. car parts are like people, not wine, they deteriorate over time.

I personally noticed a minor difference when i changed to MSD wires and NGK plugs. My car had 16k at the time, and it started better and accellerated smoother. it wasnt necessary, but i want my car to run like new forever, and over-maintaining it is really the only way to achieve that IMO. Not sure about the coil tho, ive heard that the MSD is indeed a stock replacement, but i sometimes have trouble believing that, since MSD is a performance company rather than a OEM replacement company. Who really knows for sure.

ignition wires are way worth it from what I've read:

Coil pack won't make any difference unless yours isn't working 100% properly. Usually this won't happen until after 80,000 miles. I doubt the aftermarket coils last any longer than stock so you'll just end up replacing it eventually anyway.

I have the Magnecore wires and MSD coil. I put them on at around 59k or so and I noticed it started a bit quicker, but thats about it. Id do it though, if its not much money.

I got a great deal on mine from a former neon owner on srtforums. He used to post on here too. I think I paid like $50 shipped for both.

I too had Magnecore wires and an MSD Coil, just the plug wires alone made the car idle better, the coil didnt change too much, just made the car start faster. My car had 55k miles on it too at its time of death.

I meant that he has plenty of life left in the stock components at 13,000 miles. Break-in period is less than 5K now, isn't it?
Fix it 'till it's broken. Then upgrade.
