Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

40te to a 41te

Post by Nilo420 » Wed Oct 12, 2022 6:06 pm

Has anyone switched a 40te to a 41te in a2005 dodge neon? Put a turbo on my 2.0 running 4.4 lbs of boost. I want to add more boost but worried that the 40te will break I want to keep it automatic.

The 41te is just a slightly stronger transaxle. I would still be careful with how much boost you run.

If you could find a GT Cruiser, adapting the PCM from a 2004 up along with the 41te from the GT Cruiser would be the better option. You would have to figure out the injector size to compensate for the .4 less liter of engine displacement.

The GT pcm will keep the shift points more optimum for boost, and the TCM part of it may firm up the shifts some.

Or just swap the entire engine/transaxle...

I have tons of gt's at the junk yard, i am only going up to 7.5 lbs of boost. Going to through it before I put it in. Going to throw some kevlar clutch packs in it just for jic.

I forget which clutch drum it is, but one of them has more friction and steel discs, basically the only difference between the 40 and the 41. I have heard of folks just swapping the drum to the 40TE ATX's to effectively making them a 41TE.

If you can get rid of the variable line pressure, that will help also. The 41TE lasted well over 200,000 miles in the 1990's 3.0 V6 P bodies and Caravans. I don't believe the line pressure varied with load on those. So the same ATX failing much sooner coupled to a 2.0 or 2.4 that has less torque makes zero sense.

It was quite easy to break the tires loose at take off with my '94 Shadow, and the wife's '93 Sundance Duster. The 2.0 neons and 2.4 Sebrings with the 40TE were pretty lackluster off the line in comparison. I recall test driving the 4 speed auto neons after my 2001 MTX neon was totalled, was such a let down from my Shadow.

As long as you don't go full boost in Overdrive, you'll be fine. That's usually the killer to these transmissions. If we could find a better way to easily up the rev limiters of these cars, and command 3rd gear better....these would last a lot longer.
