Atx gear ratio swap

Post by tacNtrack » Sat Mar 18, 2023 12:55 pm

I have a 2001 neon with a sohc and a automatic. We are turning this car into 3/8mile dirt track car. Tomorrow I headed to the junkyard to pickup a 2.4L to swap in while I am there i would like to grab a ring and pinon set. I have few questions.
Can someone verify that i currently have a 2.89?
I assum from this https://www.neons.org/tire/speed.shtml . That is is final drive i have bit before I go pulling a diff id like to be sure.
Will a pt cruiser or a manual neon ring and pinon bolt into a sohc auto trans?

I really think I need some thing along the lines of a 4.11 but the 3.94 looks like it will work well.

I believe the 2001 were still all 3 speeds. So it's the 31TH. The PT came with the 41TE.

If you can run a manual in your class, you'd be better off finding either a 3.55 or a 3.94 manual trans. The 3.94 is R/T and ACR specific and the 3.55 is in any non-R/T or ACR manual trans Neon, including 95-2005. The 3.94 stretches from 1996 to 2003, iirc. I'd think on a 3/8 mile, you'd be living in 3rd, maybe down into 2nd to pull out of corners. If you wind out 3rd, don't shift to 4th, just nail the limiter until you need to let off, IMO.

Many people don't mess with the 31TH, but I think the key to them is in the transfer gears rather than in the ring and pinion. The 31TH was used in a ton of cars from Shadow/Sundance, Daytona, Caravan, Acclaim/Spirit, etc, etc, etc.

It was called the A413 before they changed the nomenclature. Used in the 1989's Omni, Daytona, etc.

They are good to about 200 hp. Pretty stout overall.

Just take a bit more power to turn than an mtx.
